Kinetic Theory of Gases: Temperature and Volume

Kinetic Theory of Gases: Temperature and Volume 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand from molecular motion that gas pressure comes from the momentum (impulse) delivered by many molecules striking the walls, and that temperature measures the molecules' average kinetic energy, so PV is proportional to NkT (the ideal gas equation of state).

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the piston is pushed in to halve the volume while the temperature is kept constant, what do you think happens to the pressure? Try to explain it in terms of molecular motion.💡 分子の速さが変わらないとき、狭い容器の中では壁にぶつかる回数はどうなるだろう。If the molecules' speeds stay the same, how often will they hit the walls in a smaller container?
If the temperature goes from 300 K to 600 K (doubled), do you think the average molecular speed also doubles?💡 温度に比例するのは速さそのものではなく、分子の運動エネルギー(½mv²)である。What is proportional to temperature is not the speed itself but the molecules' kinetic energy (½mv²).

Try it

With the defaults (Temperature T 300 K, Piston position (volume V) 100 %, Number of molecules N 200), wait a few seconds and record “Mean speed ⟨v⟩ (measured)”, “Pressure P (last 1 s)”, “PV (measured)” and “Wall collisions”.
Set “Piston position (volume V)” to 50 %, wait a few seconds, and compare how P, PV, wall collisions and mean speed change.
Return the volume to 100 % and set “Temperature T” to 600 K. Watch how the mean speed, the speed-distribution histogram and P change.
Set the temperature back to 300 K, set “Number of molecules N” to 400, and compare P and PV with the starting values.

Check

At constant temperature, when the volume went from 100 % to 50 %, what happened to the pressure P and to PV?→ P P roughly doubled, from about 133 to about 278, but PV stayed nearly constant at about 127–129 (Boyle's law). The mean speed stayed at about 373 m/s.
What happened to the number of wall collisions when the volume was reduced?→ 増えた(約 255 回/秒 → 約 400 回/秒、ピストンへの衝突は約 60 → 約 140 回/秒)。 It increased (about 255/s → about 400/s; piston hits about 60 → about 140/s), because the molecules have a shorter distance to travel between walls.
When the temperature went from 300 K to 600 K, how did the mean speed and the histogram change?→ 平均速さは約 374 m/s から約 528 m/s へ、約 1.4 倍(√2 倍)になった。 The mean speed rose from about 374 m/s to about 528 m/s, about 1.4 times (√2). The histogram shifted to the right (faster) and spread out. Pressure and PV also roughly doubled.
When the number of molecules went from 200 to 400, what happened to P and PV?→ どちらもほぼ2倍になった(PV 積 約 128 → 約 257)。 Both roughly doubled (PV about 128 → about 257). The mean speed did not change; more molecules simply hit the walls.

Think further

Why does doubling the temperature double the pressure? Explain using the fact that the speed increases by √2.→ 速さが √2 倍になると、1回の衝突で壁に与える運動量(2mv_x)が √2 倍になり、単位時間あたりの衝突回数も √2 倍になる。 When the speed increases by √2, the momentum given to the wall in each collision (2mv_x) increases by √2, and the number of collisions per unit time also increases by √2. Their product makes the pressure 2 times larger, so pressure is proportional to v², that is, to the average kinetic energy (temperature).
Using the ideas in this simulation, explain why a bicycle tire gets harder when you pump air into it.→ 空気を入れると、ほぼ同じ体積の中の分子数 N が増える。 Pumping in air increases the number of molecules N in nearly the same volume. At the same temperature each molecule's speed is unchanged, but more molecules hit the wall (inside of the tire), so the total momentum delivered to the wall, the pressure, increases in proportion to N.

This is a 2D ideal-gas model: molecule–molecule collisions are not simulated, and pressure and volume are in simulation units (only speeds are converted to m/s for nitrogen). While the piston moves, the walls act as a heat bath and velocities are rescaled to keep T constant, so only isothermal changes are shown, not the heating of adiabatic compression. Pressure is computed from collisions in the last 1 s and fluctuates, so have students wait a few seconds before reading values.
