Planet Race: Kepler’s Third Law
Students understand that for planets orbiting the same star, the square of the orbital period T is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis a (T²/a³ is constant), so outer planets move more slowly; and that on an elliptical orbit the Sun is at a focus and a planet moves fastest at perihelion and slowest at aphelion.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Suppose a planet's distance from the Sun (semi-major axis) is 4 times Earth's. How many years do you think one orbit takes?💡 軌道が長くなるだけでなく、遠くでは太陽の引力が弱く、動く速さも変わる。 Not only is the orbit longer; farther out the Sun's pull is weaker and the speed changes too. It may not be simply 4 times.
Do you think a planet on a stretched elliptical orbit moves at the same speed everywhere along its orbit?💡 太陽に近いところと遠いところで、太陽から受ける引力の大きさはどう違うだろう。How does the Sun's pull differ when the planet is near the Sun compared with far from it?
Try it
- 初期設定(A の a 0.60、B の a 2.00、離心率 e 0.40)で動きを観察し、表の T[年] と T²/a³ を読む。 Watch the motion with the defaults (A: a 0.60, B: a 2.00, Eccentricity e 0.40) and read T[yr] and T²/a³ in the table. Also notice the trail colors (red = fast, blue = slow).
- 「B の a」スライダーを 4.00 にして、B の周期 T と T²/a³ を読み、C(基準、a = 1.00)と比べる。Set the “B: a” slider to 4.00, read B's period T and T²/a³, and compare them with C (ref, a = 1.00).
Raise “Eccentricity e” to 0.60 and watch how each planet's speed and r[AU] in the table change between perihelion (right) and aphelion (left). Also confirm that the Sun is at a focus, not at the center of the ellipse.
Set “Eccentricity e” to 0 and “A: a” to 1.00, then press “Reset”. Check whether A and C go around together with the same period.
Set “Speed” to ×8.00 and use the “Orbits” column to count how many orbits B (a = 4.00) completes while C completes 10.
Check
What was the period of the planet with a = 4.00 AU? What is its value of T²/a³?→ 8.000 年(= 4^(3/2))。T²/a³ = 64/64 = 1.0000 で、A・C と同じ値だった。8.000 years (= 4^(3/2)). T²/a³ = 64/64 = 1.0000, the same as A and C.
However a and e were changed, what happened to T²/a³ for the three planets?→ いつも 3 惑星とも 1.0000 で同じだった。 It was always 1.0000 for all three planets. The period depends only on the semi-major axis a, not on the eccentricity e.
With e = 0.40, over what range does C's (a = 1.00) distance r from the Sun vary, and where does it move fastest?→ r r varies from about 0.60 AU at perihelion to about 1.40 AU at aphelion. It moved fastest near perihelion on the right (red trail) and slowest at aphelion on the left (blue trail).
While C completed 10 orbits, how many did B with a = 4.00 complete?→ 約1周(周期が8年なので、10年では1周と少し)。 About 1 orbit (its period is 8 years, so in 10 years it goes a little more than once around). Outer planets go around more slowly.
Think further
Why is T²/a³ the same for every planet? Reason from the law of universal gravitation and circular motion.→ 円軌道なら、万有引力 GMm/a² が向心力 m(2π/T)²a になるので、T²/a³ = 4π²/(GM) となる。 For a circular orbit, gravity GMm/a² provides the centripetal force m(2π/T)²a, giving T²/a³ = 4π²/(GM). The planet's mass m cancels, so the value depends only on the Sun's mass M and is common to all planets orbiting the same Sun.
Why does a planet move faster at perihelion and slower at aphelion?→ 太陽に近づくとき引力が速度と同じ向きの成分をもって加速し、遠ざかるときは減速させるから。 While approaching the Sun, gravity has a component along the velocity and speeds the planet up; while moving away it slows it down. Kepler's second law (equal areas in equal times) also requires a planet close to the Sun to move faster to sweep the same area in the same time.
Common misconceptions
The Sun is at the center of an elliptical orbit. → The Sun is at a focus of the ellipse, offset from the center by a·e.
Twice the distance means twice the period. → The period is proportional to a^(3/2), so 4 times the distance gives 8 times the period.

Units are AU and years, with T = a^(3/2) (T²/a³ = 1) for one solar mass. Planet–planet attraction and the Sun's motion are ignored, and positions come from solving Kepler's equation numerically. As simplifications, all three planets share one eccentricity and all perihelia point right, unlike real Solar System orbits.
