Depth and Buoyancy Simulator

中1 · 物理単元: 圧力と水圧・浮力Depth and Buoyancy Simulator 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that water pressure increases in proportion to depth (p = ρgh), and that an object in water receives a buoyant force that depends on the volume of its underwater part, so it sinks if its density is greater than that of water (1.0 g/cm³) and floats if it is less.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the water pressure at a depth of 10 cm is 980 Pa, what do you think the pressure will be at a depth of 20 cm, and at the water surface (depth 0 cm)?💡 水圧は、その場所より上にある水の重さによって生じます。Water pressure is caused by the weight of the water above that point.
A piece of wood floats in water and a piece of metal sinks. Is it the object's weight that decides whether it floats or sinks, or something else?💡 同じ大きさで材質の違う物体を比べると、何が違うでしょうか。When you compare objects of the same size made of different materials, what is different about them?

Try it

Move the "(3) Measuring depth h" slider to 0 cm, 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm, and record the "Water pressure (at h)" value, the p = ρgh calculation shown, and the length of the green arrow.
Change the "(1) Block density ρblock" slider to 0.30, 0.80, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 g/cm³, waiting a few seconds each time, and record "State", "Weight W / Buoyancy F" and "Underwater part Vsub".
Set the density to 0.60 g/cm³ and move the "(2) Start depth" slider to 15 cm (or drag the block down with your finger), then watch how the block moves after you let go and how the buoyancy F changes.
Set the density to 1.00 g/cm³, set "(2) Start depth" to 5 cm and other depths, and check whether the block stays where it is.

Check

What was the water pressure at depths of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 cm? What is the relationship between depth and water pressure?→ 0 Pa、490 Pa、980 Pa、1960 Pa、2940 Pa。 0 Pa, 490 Pa, 980 Pa, 1960 Pa and 2940 Pa. When the depth doubles, the pressure doubles: water pressure is proportional to depth (0 Pa at the surface).
For blocks with densities of 0.30 and 0.80 g/cm³, what percentage of the block was under water while floating?→ 0.30 では 30 %(3.6/12 cm、浮力 2.26 N)、0.80 では 80 %(9.6/12 cm、浮力 6.02 N)。 30% at 0.30 (3.6 of 12 cm, buoyancy 2.26 N) and 80% at 0.80 (9.6 of 12 cm, buoyancy 6.02 N). In both cases the block stops where buoyancy F equals weight W, and the fraction under water equals ρblock ÷ ρwater.
At densities of 1.50 and 2.00 g/cm³, what was the buoyancy F? How does it compare with the weight W?→ どちらも浮力は 7.53 N で、全部沈んだときの最大値のまま変わらない。 In both cases the buoyancy is 7.53 N, its maximum value when fully submerged, and does not change. The weights are 11.29 N and 15.05 N, larger than the buoyancy, so the block sinks to the bottom and rests there (the bottom supports the difference).
What happened when the 0.60 g/cm³ block was pushed down to 15 cm and released?→ 全部浸かっているので浮力 7.53 N が重力 4.52 N より大きく、ブロックは浮上した。 Fully submerged, its buoyancy of 7.53 N was larger than its weight of 4.52 N, so it rose. Once it began to come out of the water, the underwater volume and hence the buoyancy decreased, and it came to rest with 60% under water (buoyancy 4.52 N).

Think further

Why does buoyancy arise? With the 1.00 density block placed with its top face at 5 cm, use the measuring point h to find the water pressure at the top face (5 cm) and the bottom face (17 cm), and explain using the difference (base area A = 64 cm² = 0.0064 m²).→ 上面は 490 Pa、下面は約 1666 Pa で、下面のほうが深いので水圧が大きい。 The top face has 490 Pa and the bottom face about 1666 Pa; the bottom is deeper, so the pressure there is larger. The difference, about 1176 Pa, multiplied by the base area 0.0064 m² gives about 7.5 N, matching the displayed buoyancy of 7.53 N. The difference in water pressure between the top and bottom faces produces the upward force (buoyancy).
Why can a ship made of iron (density about 7.9 g/cm³) float on water?→ 船は内部が空洞になっていて、空気を含めた船全体の平均の密度が水より小さいから。 A ship is hollow, so the average density of the whole ship, including the air inside, is less than that of water. Because the hull pushes aside a large volume of water, it sinks only until the buoyancy equals its weight, and then floats.

The displayed pressure is only the pressure due to the water itself; atmospheric pressure is not included. Water resistance is added to the block's motion in a simple way, and at a density of exactly 1.00 the block stays still at any depth, although in reality small effects such as water temperature or compression would make it drift. The first "think" question (buoyancy as a pressure difference) can be used as an extension task that previews later lower-secondary content.
