Vertical Spring: Simple Harmonic Motion

Students understand that a mass on a vertical spring oscillates in simple harmonic motion about the equilibrium position, where the spring is stretched by mg/k (not about the natural length), and that the period T = 2π√(m/k) depends only on mass and spring constant, not on amplitude (isochronism).

Predict (before you touch anything)

A mass hangs from a spring attached to the ceiling and is set bouncing up and down. About which position do you think the mass oscillates? Is it the position of the spring's natural length?💡 おもりを静かにつるしたとき、ばねはどうなっているか。 What does the spring look like when the mass hangs at rest? Think about where the forces on the mass balance.
If the amplitude is increased, do you think the time for one full oscillation (the period) becomes longer, shorter, or stays the same?💡 振幅が大きいと移動距離は長くなるが、ばねの力も大きくなる。 A larger amplitude means a longer distance to travel, but also a larger spring force. Consider both.

Observe with the default values ("Mass m" 1.00 kg, "Spring constant k" 40 N/m, "Amplitude A" 0.20 m). Record the dashed lines "natural L0", "equilibrium" and "current" in the figure, and T(theory), T(measured) and "Stretch at rest mg/k" at the top. Watch how the v (orange) and a (purple) arrows on the mass change in direction and length at the top, center and bottom (use "Pause" to stop it).
Lower "Amplitude A" to 0.05 m and check whether T(measured) and the spacing of the waves in the graph change. Also record the total K+U shown under the energy bar.
Return "Amplitude A" to 0.20 m and set "Mass m" to 4.00 kg. Record how T(theory), "Stretch at rest mg/k", the position of the equilibrium dashed line and K+U change.
Return "Mass m" to 1.00 kg and set "Spring constant k" to 160 N/m, then record T and mg/k. If needed, press "Reset (t=0)" to start over, and use the "v: ON" and "a: ON" buttons to switch the graphs and arrows on or off.

Check

With the default values, about which position is the mass oscillating? How much is the spring stretched beyond its natural length there?→ 「釣り合い」の破線(自然長 0.30 m より mg/k = 0.245 m 下)を中心に、上下に 0.20 m ずつ振動している。 It oscillates 0.20 m up and down about the "equilibrium" dashed line, which is mg/k = 0.245 m below the natural length (0.30 m). The natural-length position is not the center of oscillation.
When the amplitude went from 0.20 m to 0.05 m, what happened to the period and to K+U?→ T(実測) は 0.993 s のまま変わらない(等時性)。 T(measured) stays at 0.993 s (isochronism). K+U = ½kA² drops from 0.800 J to 0.050 J (1/16).
What were the period and the stretch at rest for m = 4.00 kg and for k = 160 N/m?→ m = 4.00 kg(k = 40)では T = 1.987 s(2倍)、mg/k = 0.980 m。 With m = 4.00 kg (k = 40), T = 1.987 s (doubled) and mg/k = 0.980 m. With k = 160 N/m (m = 1.00), T ≈ 0.497 s (halved) and mg/k ≈ 0.061 m. T is proportional to √(m/k). Changing the mass leaves K+U at 0.800 J (½kA² does not contain m).
What do the velocity v and acceleration a arrows look like at the center and at the top and bottom ends?→ 中心では v が最大で a は 0、上下の端では v が 0 で a が最大になる。 At the center v is maximum and a is zero; at the ends v is zero and a is maximum. a always points toward the center, and in the graph a is opposite to x (a = −ω²x).

Think further

Even though gravity acts, why is the period of a vertical spring oscillator the same as for a horizontal one, 2π√(m/k)?→ 釣り合い位置では kd = mg(d = mg/k)が成り立つ。 At equilibrium kd = mg (d = mg/k). When displaced by x from equilibrium, the net force is mg − k(d + x) = −kx, so gravity just cancels part of the spring force and shifts the center of oscillation. The restoring-force constant is still k, so the period is unchanged.
If the same spring and mass were used on the Moon (gravity about 1/6 of Earth's), what would happen to the equilibrium position and the period?→ 静止伸び mg/k は約1/6になり、釣り合い位置は上に移る。 The stretch at rest mg/k becomes about 1/6, so the equilibrium position moves up. But the period T = 2π√(m/k) does not contain g, so it stays the same (in this simulation g is fixed at 9.8 m/s²).

The spring's mass and air resistance are ignored; x, v and a are positive downward, and U = ½kx² is the elastic plus gravitational potential energy measured from equilibrium. Moving a slider does not reset t; the phase is kept continuous. Because mg/k changes a lot with mass, the vertical view of the figure may shift.
