Kundt's Tube: Where Does the Powder Collect?
Students understand that in Kundt's tube a standing wave with displacement nodes at both ends (resonance) forms only when the air column length satisfies L = n·v/(2f), and that the powder collects at displacement nodes (= pressure antinodes) spaced λ/2 apart, so the wavelength of the sound can be found from the spacing of the heaps.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When a standing sound wave forms in the tube, do you think the cork powder on the bottom will collect at the displacement antinodes, where the air vibrates strongly, or at the displacement nodes, where the air hardly moves? What would happen to powder lying where the air shakes hard, compared with powder lying where the air is calm?
If the frequency f is increased, do you think the spacing between powder heaps will become wider or narrower?💡 音の速さ v、振動数 f、波長 λ の関係 v = fλ を思い出そう。Recall the relation between the speed of sound v, frequency f and wavelength λ: v = fλ.
Try it
In the initial state ("Frequency" f = 500 Hz, "Piston position (air column length)" L = 40.0 cm), record the status in the top-right corner (Not resonating), how the powder looks, and the value n = 2fL/v in the panel. Also read "resonant L for this f" in the panel.
Set "Piston position (air column length)" to 68.0 cm (near a resonant value the slider snaps to the exact value). Wait a while, and record how the powder gathers into heaps, the positions of the heaps on the cm scale, and the number of heaps.
Press "Show pressure standing wave" and compare where the antinodes and nodes of the orange dashed curve (pressure change) are relative to the blue displacement curve and the powder heaps.
Keeping f = 500 Hz, move L to 62.0 cm and watch how the powder changes. Then set "Frequency" to 1000 Hz and L to 85.0 cm, and compare the spacing and number of heaps with the 500 Hz case.
Check
With f = 500 Hz and L = 68.0 cm, what is n, and where and how many powder heaps formed?→ n = 2fL/v = 2.000 で共鳴し、山は 0 cm、34 cm、68 cm の3か所(両端含む)。 n = 2fL/v = 2.000, so it resonates, and heaps form at 3 places: 0 cm, 34 cm and 68 cm (including both ends). The spacing is λ/2 = 34.0 cm, so λ = 68 cm, and v = fλ = 500 × 0.68 = 340 m/s, as expected.
Are the powder heaps at the antinodes or nodes of the blue curve (displacement amplitude)? What about the pressure curve?→ 山は変位の節(青い曲線が交わって幅がゼロの所)にあり、そこは圧力変化の腹になっている。 The heaps are at the displacement nodes (where the blue curves cross with zero width), which are the pressure antinodes. Conversely, the displacement antinodes are pressure nodes, and almost no powder remains there.
What happened when L was moved to 62.0 cm (f = 500 Hz)?→ n = 1.824 で整数でないため「共鳴していない」となり、弱い進行波だけになる。 n = 1.824 is not a whole number, so it shows "Not resonating" and only a weak traveling wave remains. There are no clear nodes or antinodes, and the powder spreads flat along the bottom without forming heaps.
With f = 1000 Hz and L = 85.0 cm, what are the spacing and number of heaps?→ n = 5 で、山の間隔は λ/2 = 17.0 cm、山は6か所(両端含む)。 n = 5, the heap spacing is λ/2 = 17.0 cm, and there are 6 heaps (including both ends). Doubling f halves the spacing; the spacing is inversely proportional to f.
Think further
Why is the resonance condition L = n·λ/2? Explain using the conditions at the two ends of the tube.→ このモデルでは振動板側とピストン側の両端で空気が動けないので、両端とも変位の節になる。 In this model the air cannot move at either end (the speaker plate and the piston), so both ends are displacement nodes. Adjacent nodes are λ/2 apart, so the column length must be a whole number of half-wavelengths: L = n·λ/2 = n·v/(2f).
In a real experiment, if the air in the tube is replaced by a gas with a higher speed of sound, such as helium, what happens to the heap spacing at the same frequency?→ λ = v/f Since λ = v/f, a higher speed of sound means a longer wavelength, so the heap spacing λ/2 becomes wider. Conversely, measuring the spacing gives the speed of sound in that gas (in this simulation v is fixed at 340 m/s).
Common misconceptions
Thinking the powder collects at displacement antinodes, where the air vibrates strongly. At antinodes the powder is shaken hard and driven away; it collects at displacement nodes (pressure antinodes), where the air hardly moves.
Thinking a standing wave forms whenever sound is played, regardless of tube length. Resonance occurs only when L = n·v/(2f); otherwise the powder does not form heaps.

Sound is a longitudinal wave and the air vibrates along the tube axis, but the screen draws the displacement amplitude as an up-down curve. Vibration and powder motion are shown in slow motion, and the model is idealized with displacement nodes at both ends. The sliders snap to the exact resonant value within ±2%, so the sharpness of resonance differs from a real tube.
