Bouncing Ball and Restitution
Students understand that when a ball hits the floor head-on, its rebound speed is multiplied by e each time (v′ = ev), so each peak height is e² times the previous one, the time between peaks shrinks by a factor of e, and a fraction (1 − e²) of the kinetic energy is lost in every collision.

Predict (before you touch anything)
A ball with coefficient of restitution e = 0.80 is dropped from 2.00 m. After the first bounce, what fraction of 2.00 m do you think its peak height will be? Is it 0.80 times, or some other value?💡 e e is a ratio of speeds. Recall how height is related to speed (v² = 2gh).
If the mass of the ball is made 4 times larger, what do you think happens to the bounce heights, and to the energy lost?💡 自由落下の運動に質量は関係するか、エネルギーの式 mgh、½mv² には質量が入っているか、を分けて考えよう。Think separately about whether mass affects free-fall motion, and whether mass appears in the energy formulas mgh and ½mv².
Try it
Set "Restitution e" to 0.80, "Start h₀" to 2.00 m and "Mass m" to 0.50 kg (the default values). Press "Slow ×¼" to play slowly, and on the left watch the ball move fastest near the floor and stop for an instant at the top, and read the |v| change (before → after) shown in the "Bounce! #n" label.
In the top-right bar chart "Peak height after each bounce hₙ", check whether the blue bars (measured) match the orange ◆ (theory e²ⁿh₀), and record the "Height ratio", "Apex interval ratio" and "KE after/KE before" values.
Set "Mass m" to 2.00 kg (the motion restarts). Compare the bar-chart heights and the energy-bar values "E₀=mgh₀" and "Lost" (in J) with those for 0.50 kg.
Change "Restitution e" to 0.50 and watch until the ball shows "At rest". Compare "Bounces n", "Energy lost" and the three ratios in the HUD with the e = 0.80 case.
After it stops, press "Reset" and then "Start" to replay from the beginning. Use "Pause" to read the "KE before→after" bars just before and after a collision.
Check
With e = 0.80, what is the "Height ratio" hₙ/hₙ₋₁? How do the bar heights (h₀ = 2.00 m) decrease?→ 0.6400 で e² と一致する。 It is 0.6400, equal to e². The heights go 2.00 → about 1.28 → about 0.82 → about 0.52 m …, shrinking by the same factor 0.64 each time, and the blue bars sit on the theoretical ◆.
What are the "Apex interval ratio" and "KE after/KE before"? How do they change when e = 0.50?→ e = 0.80 では頂点間隔比 0.8000(= e)、KE直後/KE直前 0.6400(= e²)。 For e = 0.80 the apex interval ratio is 0.8000 (= e) and KE after/KE before is 0.6400 (= e²). For e = 0.50 they become 0.5000 and 0.2500, and the height ratio also becomes 0.2500.
When "Mass m" is changed from 0.50 kg to 2.00 kg, what happened to the bar heights and to the energy values?→ 跳ね返る高さ(棒グラフ)は全く変わらない。 The bounce heights (bar chart) do not change at all. However, E₀ = mgh₀ goes from 9.80 J to 39.20 J, four times larger, and all values in joules, such as the energy lost, also become four times larger.
In the energy bar, which part changes at a collision? While the ball is in the air, does the mechanical energy (white line) change?→ 飛んでいる間は位置エネルギーと運動エネルギーが入れかわるだけで白線の高さ(力学的エネルギー)は一定。 In the air, potential and kinetic energy only exchange, and the white line (mechanical energy) stays constant. Only at the instant of collision does the kinetic energy drop to e² times its value, and the difference piles up as the red "Lost" part.
Think further
Why does the time between peaks become e times shorter each bounce? Explain using the rebound speed v′.→ 床から跳ね上がって再び床に戻るまでの時間は 2v′/g で、速さ v′ に比例する。 The time from leaving the floor to landing again is 2v′/g, which is proportional to the rebound speed v′. Since v′ is multiplied by e each bounce, the flight time (time between peaks) is also multiplied by e. The height is v′²/2g, so it is multiplied by e².
Where does the energy lost in a collision go? What would happen if e = 1?→ ボールや床の変形による熱や音などに変わる(エネルギー全体は保存されている)。 0.95。It turns into heat, sound, etc., from deforming the ball and floor (total energy is still conserved). If e = 1 (an elastic collision), no kinetic energy is lost and the ball would return to h₀ every time. Real balls have e < 1, and in this simulation e goes up to 0.95.
Common misconceptions
Thinking that e = 0.8 means the height also becomes 0.8 times. e is a ratio of speeds, so the height becomes e² = 0.64 times.
Thinking that a heavier ball bounces higher (or lower). Ignoring air resistance, the bounce height depends only on e and h₀, not on mass. What mass changes is the amount of energy in joules.

The model ignores air resistance and the time the ball spends deforming; each collision instantly sets v′ = −ev. When the rebound speed falls to 5% or less of the first impact speed the ball is shown "At rest", so the infinite series of bounces is not displayed. Having students compare masses, where heights stay the same but energies scale with mass, is especially effective.
