1D Collisions: Momentum and Restitution
Students understand that in a head-on collision of two balls on a line, total momentum is conserved for any coefficient of restitution e, but total kinetic energy is conserved only when e = 1 (elastic collision) and decreases when e < 1.
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
Ball A moving at 3 m/s hits an identical ball B at rest, head-on (e = 1). How do you think each ball moves after the collision?💡 ニュートンのゆりかご(振り子が並んだおもちゃ)の動きを思い出してみましょう。Think about how a Newton's cradle (the toy with a row of hanging balls) behaves.
If you lower e so that the balls bounce less, do you think the total momentum after the collision will be less than before? What about the total kinetic energy?💡 衝突のとき、2球がおたがいに及ぼし合う力(作用・反作用)の関係を考えましょう。Think about the forces the two balls exert on each other during the collision (action and reaction).
Try it
The simulation starts automatically when the page opens, so first press "Reset". With the defaults (① Mass of ball A m₁ = 1.0 kg, ② Ball A initial velocity u₁ = 3.0 m/s, ③ Coefficient of restitution e = 1.00; ball B has m₂ = 1.0 kg and is at rest), press "Start" and look at the table (Before, After, Theory) and the velocity arrows.
Press "Reset", set ③ Coefficient of restitution e to 0.50, and press "Start". Record v₁, v₂, Momentum Σp, Kinetic energy ΣK and the "Kinetic energy lost" value.
In the same way, set e = 0, run the collision, and watch how the two balls move afterwards.
Set e back to 1 and compare v₁, v₂ and the arrow directions after the collision with ① Mass of ball A m₁ set to 3.0 kg and to 0.5 kg.
Check
With equal masses (m₁ = m₂ = 1.0 kg) and e = 1, what were the velocities after the collision?→ v₁ = 0.000 m/s、v₂ = 3.000 m/s で、球Aは止まり球Bが 3 m/s で動き出した(速度が交換された)。 v₁ = 0.000 m/s and v₂ = 3.000 m/s: ball A stopped and ball B moved off at 3 m/s (the balls swapped velocities). Momentum (3.000 kg·m/s) and kinetic energy (4.500 J) both stayed the same.
With e = 0.50, what happened to the total momentum and total kinetic energy across the collision?→ v₁ = 0.750 m/s、v₂ = 2.250 m/s v₁ = 0.750 m/s and v₂ = 2.250 m/s. Total momentum stayed 3.000 → 3.000 kg·m/s (conserved), while kinetic energy fell from 4.500 J to 2.813 J, a loss of 1.688 J (37.5 %).
With e = 0, how did the two balls move after the collision?→ 2球はくっついたまま同じ速度 1.500 m/s で一体となって進んだ(完全非弾性衝突)。 (50.0 %)。The two balls moved together at the same velocity, 1.500 m/s (perfectly inelastic collision). Momentum stayed 3.000 kg·m/s, but 2.250 J of kinetic energy was lost (50.0 %).
With e = 1, how did ball A move after the collision when m₁ = 3.0 kg compared with m₁ = 0.5 kg?→ m₁ = 3.0 kg では v₁ = 1.500 m/s、v₂ = 4.500 m/s で、球Aは同じ向きに進み続けた。 For m₁ = 3.0 kg, v₁ = 1.500 m/s and v₂ = 4.500 m/s, so ball A kept moving forward. For m₁ = 0.5 kg, v₁ = −1.000 m/s and v₂ = 2.000 m/s, so ball A bounced back and its arrow pointed left.
Think further
Why is total momentum conserved for any e, while kinetic energy decreases when e < 1? Where does the lost kinetic energy go?→ 衝突中に2球が及ぼし合う力は作用・反作用で大きさが等しく向きが逆、はたらく時間も同じなので、力積も逆向きで等しく、運動量の合計は変わらない。 During the collision the balls exert equal and opposite forces on each other (action and reaction) for the same time, so their impulses are equal and opposite and total momentum is unchanged. When e < 1, the balls' deformation does not fully spring back, and part of the kinetic energy becomes heat, sound or deformation energy, so kinetic energy decreases.
For m₁ = 1.0 kg and u₁ = 3.0 m/s, which value of e gives the largest loss of kinetic energy? Explain with the formula.→ 損失は ½·m₁m₂/(m₁+m₂)·(1−e²)(u₁−u₂)² で、(1−e²) が最大になる e = 0 のとき最大になる。 The loss is ½·m₁m₂/(m₁+m₂)·(1−e²)(u₁−u₂)², which is largest when (1−e²) is largest, i.e. e = 0. Then it is ½·0.5·1·9 = 2.25 J, matching the 2.250 J shown in the simulation.
Common misconceptions
In a collision with little bounce (e < 1), momentum is also lost." Without external forces, total momentum is conserved for every value of e.
If momentum is conserved, kinetic energy must be conserved too." Kinetic energy is conserved only in an elastic collision (e = 1).

Ball B is fixed at m₂ = 1.0 kg and starts at rest (u₂ = 0); motion is frictionless along a line. The collision is treated as instantaneous with velocities from the theoretical formulas, so deformation and the force during contact are not shown. Moving a slider restarts the run, and the run ends ("finished") when either ball reaches the edge.
