Power Line Loss and Transformers

物理基礎 · 物理単元: 交流と変圧器Power Line Loss and Transformers 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that, for the same transmitted power P, raising the line voltage V with a transformer lowers the line current I = P/V, so the power lost in the wires, P_loss = R·I² = R·(P/V)², falls in inverse proportion to the square of the voltage.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When sending the same power, if the line voltage is doubled, by what factor do you think the power lost in the wires will change?💡 電力 P = V·I が同じなら、V を2倍にしたとき電流 I はどうなるでしょうか。 If the power P = V·I stays the same, what happens to I when V doubles? Which formula with the current gives the loss?
If a transformer raises the voltage 10 times, do you think the power it delivers also increases?💡 変圧器の入力側と出力側で、電圧と電流がそれぞれどう変わるかに注目しましょう。Pay attention to how both the voltage and the current change between the input and output sides of the transformer.

Try it

In the starting state (Power sent P = 50 kW, Line voltage V = 1,000 V, Total wire resistance R = 10 Ω), read the Line current I, Power lost P_loss, Power to homes P_home and Loss ratio, and look at the red glow on the line and the brightness of the bulb.
Press the "V × 2" button twice (1,000 V → 2,000 V → 4,000 V) and each time record I, P_loss and the Loss ratio, along with the change in the glow and the speed of the particles on the line.
Move the "Line voltage V (log scale)" slider all the way to 10,000 V, and compare "voltage × current = power" for the input and output in the Step-up transformer and Step-down transformer lines.
Move the slider to the far left, 100 V (no step-up), and see what is displayed. Then return V to 1,000 V and also check what happens when "Total wire resistance R" is set to 100 Ω.

Check

As V went from 1,000 V to 2,000 V to 4,000 V, how did I and P_loss change?→ I は 50.0 A → 25.0 A → 12.5 A と半分ずつに、P_loss は 25.0 kW → 6.25 kW → 1.56 kW と 1/4 ずつになった。 I halved each time (50.0 A → 25.0 A → 12.5 A), and P_loss became a quarter each time (25.0 kW → 6.25 kW → 1.56 kW). The Loss ratio fell from 50.0 % to 12.5 % to 3.13 %, the red glow on the line weakened, and the particles slowed down.
In the starting state, what is the relation between P, P_home and P_loss?→ 「電力収支」の欄のとおり 50.000 kW = 25.000 kW + 25.000 kW で、P = P_home + P_loss が成り立つ。 As the "Power balance" line shows, 50.000 kW = 25.000 kW + 25.000 kW, so P = P_home + P_loss. The balance always holds whatever V is set to.
At V = 10,000 V, what are the voltage, current and power at the input and output of the step-up transformer?→ 入力は 100 V × 500 A = 50.0 kW、出力は 10,000 V × 5.00 A = 50.0 kW。 このとき損失は 250 W(損失率 0.50 %)まで減る。Input: 100 V × 500 A = 50.0 kW; output: 10,000 V × 5.00 A = 50.0 kW. The voltage rises 100 times but the current drops to 1/100, so the power does not increase. The loss here is only 250 W (Loss ratio 0.50 %).
What happened when V was set to 100 V (no step-up)?→ I = 500 A となり、R·I² = 2.50 MW が送電電力 50 kW を上回るため、家庭に届く電力は「0 W(送電不能)」と表示された。 I became 500 A, and R·I² = 2.50 MW exceeded the 50 kW being sent, so Power to homes showed "0 W (cannot deliver)". The voltage drop I·R = 5000 V would be larger than the line voltage itself.

Think further

If you compute the line loss as P_loss = V²/R, you get the opposite conclusion: the higher the voltage, the larger the loss. What is wrong with that?→ V²/R の V は抵抗 R の両端にかかる電圧でなければならないが、送電電圧 V は送電線と家庭側全体にかかる電圧であり、送電線の両端の電圧(電圧降下 I·R)ではない。 In V²/R, V must be the voltage across the resistor R itself. The line voltage V is across the whole line plus the load, not across the wires alone (the drop across the wires is only I·R). The loss must be found from the current through the wires, I = P/V, as R·I².
Two ways to reduce the loss are lowering the wire resistance R and raising the line voltage V. Why is raising V more effective?→ P_loss = R·(P/V)² なので、損失は R には比例するだけだが V の2乗に反比例する。 Since P_loss = R·(P/V)², the loss is only proportional to R but inversely proportional to V squared. Raising V tenfold cuts the loss to 1/100. Cutting R to 1/100 would need impractically thick wires, while V can easily be raised with a transformer.

Both the generator and the home use 100 V, the transformers are ideal (no losses), and AC phase and line reactance are ignored (real transmission uses hundreds of thousands of volts). Particle speed is only a schematic of current size, and the red glow reaches its maximum at I = 70 A, so larger currents look the same. The "V × 2" button makes it easy to confirm that the loss becomes exactly 1/4, and the panel's "If voltage is doubled" line also helps.
