Phase Difference in an RL Series AC Circuit 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand, using waveforms and a phasor diagram, that in an RL series circuit the resistor voltage v_R is in phase with the current, the inductor voltage v_L leads the current by π/2, and as a result the current lags the source voltage by φ = tan⁻¹(ωL/R).

Predict (before you touch anything)

In an AC circuit containing a coil (inductance L), do you think the peaks of the current occur at the same time as the peaks of the source voltage, or are they shifted? If shifted, earlier or later?💡 コイルには、電流の変化をさまたげる(自己誘導)はたらきがあります。A coil opposes changes in the current through it (self-induction).
If you raise the frequency f, how do you think the size (amplitude) of the current will change?💡 電流の変化が速くなると、コイルの「さまたげ」はどうなるでしょうか。What happens to the coil's opposition when the current changes more quickly?

In the starting state (Frequency f=50 Hz, L=0.050 H, Resistance R=20 Ω), look at "(2) Waveforms" and compare the peaks of v_R (orange), i (white dashed), v_L (green) and v (blue). Press "Pause" or set the speed to "1 cycle = 4 s" if needed.
In "(3) Phasor diagram", check that the V_L arrow drawn from the tip of V_R ends exactly at the tip of V, and that V_R and V_L are at a right angle. Also check v = v_R + v_L with the numbers in the "Instantaneous" line below.
Move the "L=" slider from 0.050 H to 0.100 H and then to 0 H, and record φ=tan⁻¹(ωL/R), Z, I₀ and V_L0 along with the shift between the waveforms.
Set L back to 0.050 H and read the same values with "Frequency f" at 10 Hz and at 100 Hz. Finally, at f=50 Hz, set "Resistance R" to 1 Ω and to 100 Ω and compare φ, V_R0 and V_L0.

Check

In the waveforms, how are the peaks of v_R, v_L and the current i arranged in time?→ v_R の山は電流 i の山と同時(同位相)。 The peaks of v_R coincide with those of i (in phase). The peaks of v_L come a quarter period (π/2) earlier than i. The source voltage v peaks between v_L and v_R, and i lags v by φ (φ = 38.1°, about 2.12 ms, in the starting state).
As L increased from 0 H to 0.050 H to 0.100 H, how did φ, I₀ and V_L0 change?→ φ は 0° → 38.1° → 57.5° と大きくなり、V_L0 は 0 V → 6.18 V → 8.44 V と増えた。 φ grew from 0° to 38.1° to 57.5°, and V_L0 from 0 V to 6.18 V to 8.44 V. Z rose from 20.00 Ω to 25.43 Ω to 37.24 Ω, so I₀ fell from 500.0 mA to 393.2 mA to 268.5 mA. With L=0, v, v_R and i were all in phase.
What were φ and I₀ at f = 10 Hz and at f = 100 Hz?→ f=10 Hz では X_L=3.14 Ω、φ=8.9°、I₀=493.9 mA。f=100 Hz では X_L=31.42 Ω、φ=57.5°、I₀=268.5 mA。 At f=10 Hz, X_L=3.14 Ω, φ=8.9° and I₀=493.9 mA. At f=100 Hz, X_L=31.42 Ω, φ=57.5° and I₀=268.5 mA. The higher the frequency, the larger ωL, so the phase difference is larger and the current is smaller.
What happened to φ, V_R0 and V_L0 when R was 1 Ω and when it was 100 Ω?→ R=1 Ω では φ=86.4° でほぼ 90°、V_L0=9.98 V で電圧のほとんどがコイルにかかる。 With R=1 Ω, φ=86.4° (almost 90°) and V_L0=9.98 V, so almost all the voltage is across the coil. With R=100 Ω, φ=8.9° and V_R0=9.88 V, so almost all is across the resistor. Increasing R makes the phase difference smaller.

Think further

In the starting state V_R0 = 7.86 V and V_L0 = 6.18 V, which add up to 14.04 V, more than the source amplitude V₀ = 10 V. Does this break energy conservation?→ 反していない。 No. v_R and v_L are π/2 out of phase, so their peaks never occur at the same time. Their amplitudes combine like two perpendicular vectors, √(7.86² + 6.18²) ≈ 10 V, not by simple addition. At every instant v = v_R + v_L still holds.
Why does the inductor voltage v_L lead the current by π/2?→ コイルの電圧は電流の変化の速さに比例する(v_L = L·di/dt)。 The inductor voltage is proportional to how fast the current changes (v_L = L·di/dt). A sinusoidal current changes fastest as it crosses zero and not at all at its peaks, so v_L is largest when the current crosses zero going up, a quarter period before the current peaks.

The source amplitude is fixed at V₀ = 10 V and the coil is ideal (no resistance). The animation runs in slow motion (e.g. "1 cycle = 2 s") rather than at the real frequency, and the current i in the waveforms is drawn on its own scale, separate from the voltages. The yellow dots in the circuit show only the direction and relative size of the current, not the real speed of electrons.
