Standing Waves on a String: Finding Resonance
Students understand that a string fixed at both ends resonates only when the driving frequency matches a natural frequency fₙ = n·v/(2L), where the wave speed is v = √(T/μ), and that the resulting standing wave has nodes at both ends and n loops (antinodes).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you slowly raise the frequency f at which the string is shaken, do you think the string vibrates strongly at every frequency, or only at certain frequencies?💡 両端が固定されているとき、弦の上にきれいに収まる波の形には条件がありそうです。When both ends are fixed, think about whether only certain wave shapes can fit neatly on the string.
If you pull the string tighter (increase the tension T), do you think the resonant frequencies go up, go down, or stay the same?💡 ギターの弦を締めたときの音の高さの変化を思い出してみましょう。Recall what happens to the pitch when you tighten a guitar string.
Try it
In the starting state (Driving frequency f = 50 Hz, Tension T = 50 N), read v = √(T/μ) = 100.0 m/s, f₁ = v/(2L) = 50.0 Hz and the list of "Natural frequencies fₙ" (f1=50.0, f2=100.0, f3=150.0, f4=200.0), then look at the "Mode 1 resonance" message and the shape of the string.
Slowly raise "Driving frequency f" and stop at f = 100 Hz and at f = 150 Hz. At each, count the "node" lines and read their positions on the scale (0.00m to 1.00m) below the string.
Move "Driving frequency f" from 100 Hz to 120 Hz and confirm that the message changes to "No resonance" and the string's vibration becomes small with no nodes. Then bring f back toward 100 Hz and find how close it must be for resonance to return.
Keeping f = 120 Hz, raise "Tension T" from 50 N to 80 N and watch how v, f₁ and the fₙ list change. Then set "Driving frequency f" to about 126.5 Hz so that the string resonates.
If the motion is too fast to follow, lower "Slow-motion factor s" or press "Pause", and check that the node positions do not move over time.
Check
At f = 100 Hz (mode 2) and f = 150 Hz (mode 3), how many inner nodes are there and where are they?→ 2次共振では内側の節は1個で、弦のちょうど中央(0.50 m)にある。 In mode 2 there is 1 inner node, exactly at the middle (0.50 m). In mode 3 there are 2, at about 0.33 m and 0.67 m, evenly spaced by L/n = 0.333 m. In both cases the two fixed ends are also nodes.
What happens to the string and the message when you change f from 100 Hz to 120 Hz?→ 「共鳴していません(最も近い f2=100.0Hz まで 20.0Hz)」と表示され、弦は小さくしか揺れず、節の線も消える。 It shows "No resonance (nearest f2=100.0Hz is 20.0Hz away)", the string only wobbles slightly, and the node lines disappear. In this simulation resonance occurs only when f is within 3 Hz of some fₙ.
When you raised the tension T from 50 N to 80 N, how did v and f₁ change?→ v v rose from 100.0 m/s to 126.5 m/s and f₁ from 50.0 Hz to 63.2 Hz, and every natural frequency in the list shifted upward (f2 = 126.5 Hz). So f = 120 Hz did not resonate, but f ≈ 126.5 Hz gave mode 2 resonance.
At T = 20 N, how many natural frequencies are there up to 210 Hz? How does this compare with T = 50 N?→ T = 20 N At T = 20 N, v = 63.2 m/s and f₁ = 31.6 Hz, so there are six (f1 to f6), compared with four at T = 50 N. Lower tension makes the natural frequencies more closely spaced.
Think further
If the tension is multiplied by 4 (from 20 N to 80 N), by what factor do the wave speed and the fundamental frequency change? Explain with the formulas.→ v = √(T/μ) Since v = √(T/μ), multiplying T by 4 multiplies v by √4 = 2 (63.2 → 126.5 m/s). Because f₁ = v/(2L) and L is fixed, f₁ also doubles (31.6 → 63.2 Hz).
Why does a standing wave form on a string fixed at both ends only when its length is a whole number of half-wavelengths (L = n·λ/2)?→ 固定端は動けないので必ず節になる。 A fixed end cannot move, so it must be a node. Neighbouring nodes in a standing wave are λ/2 apart, so both ends can be nodes only if L is a whole number of half-wavelengths. Substituting λ = v/f gives f = n·v/(2L), the natural frequencies.
Common misconceptions
The higher the driving frequency, the more strongly the string vibrates." In fact the string vibrates strongly only when the frequency matches a natural frequency (resonance); between them the vibration stays small.
The resonant frequencies depend only on the length, not the tension." Tension changes the wave speed v = √(T/μ), so the natural frequencies change too.

The string length L = 1.0 m and linear density μ = 5 g/m are fixed, and resonance is decided by a simplified rule: f within 3 Hz of some fₙ. The resonant shape is drawn as y = A|sin(nπx/L)|·sin(2πft), so neighbouring loops appear to move in the same direction; point out that in a real standing wave neighbouring loops vibrate in opposite directions (opposite phase). The small off-resonance wobble is only illustrative, and amplitudes are not quantitative.
