How a Transformer Works
Students understand that a transformer induces a voltage in the secondary coil through the changing magnetic flux in the iron core produced by the primary AC, changing the voltage by the turns ratio N2/N1 without changing the frequency, and that an ideal transformer's input power equals its output power.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If the secondary coil has twice as many turns as the primary coil, what do you think happens to the secondary voltage and to its frequency?💡 一次コイルと二次コイルは、同じ鉄心の中の同じ磁束の変化を受けていることに注目しましょう。Notice that both coils are wrapped around the same iron core and feel the same changing flux.
Do you think a transformer that raises the voltage can also increase the power (energy)?💡 電力は電圧と電流の積であることと、エネルギーがどこから来るかを考えてみましょう。Remember that power is voltage times current, and think about where the energy comes from.
Try it
In the starting state (Turns ratio N2/N1 = 1.00, Frequency f = 2.0 Hz, Load resistance R = 50 Ω), watch the direction and length of the flux Φ arrows in the iron core and the oscilloscope traces v1 (yellow), v2 (light blue) and Φ (green dashed). Compare when v1 reaches its peak with when Φ reaches its peak.
Press the "N2/N1 = 2" button and record the height of the v2 wave, the dashed lines (v1 zero crossings) and the RMS voltage, current and power in the table. Then set the turns ratio slider to 0.50 and record the same values.
Change the Frequency f slider from 2.0 Hz to 5.0 Hz and compare the number of waves on the oscilloscope and the primary and secondary "Frequency" values in the table.
With N2/N1 = 2, change Load resistance R from 50 Ω to 100 Ω and see how the currents and powers change.
Switch the third trace to "3rd trace: primary current i1" and "3rd trace: secondary current i2", and observe the current waveforms and the directions of the N1·i1 (yellow) and N2·i2 (light blue) arrows inside the core.
Check
When N2/N1 = 2, how did the amplitude and phase of v2 compare with v1?→ v2 の実効値は 200.0 V で v1(100.0 V)の 2 倍になり、波の高さも 2 倍だった。 The RMS value of v2 was 200.0 V, twice v1 (100.0 V), and the wave was twice as tall. It crossed zero at the same moments as v1 (the dashed lines), so they are in phase. At N2/N1 = 0.50 it was 50.0 V, half of v1.
When f was set to 5.0 Hz, what happened to the secondary frequency?→ 一次側も二次側も 5.0 Hz になり、オシロスコープでも v1 と v2 の波の数は同じだった。 Both the primary and the secondary became 5.0 Hz, and v1 and v2 showed the same number of waves on the oscilloscope. A transformer changes the size of the voltage but not the frequency.
When does the flux Φ reach its peak compared with the peak of v1?→ Φ は v1 より 1/4 周期(90°)遅れて最大になる。 Φ peaks a quarter period (90°) after v1. When v1 is at its peak, Φ is passing through zero, which is when Φ is changing fastest.
With R = 50 Ω, how did the currents and power change when the turns ratio went from 1 to 2? How were P1 and P2 related?→ I2 は 2.00 A → 4.00 A(2 倍)、I1 は 2.00 A → 8.00 A(4 倍)になり、電流の比 I2/I1 は 1.00 → 0.50 と半分になった。 I2 went from 2.00 A to 4.00 A (×2) and I1 from 2.00 A to 8.00 A (×4), so the current ratio I2/I1 halved from 1.00 to 0.50. The power went from 200.0 W to 800.0 W, but in both cases P1 = P2.
Think further
If a transformer doubles the voltage and the same 200 W is delivered from the primary, what happens to the secondary current?→ P = V2·I2 が同じで V2 が 2 倍なら、I2 は半分になる。 If P = V2·I2 stays the same and V2 doubles, I2 halves. The display shows that with R = 200 Ω, V2 = 200.0 V, I2 = 1.00 A (half) and I1 = 2.00 A (unchanged). Power lines use high voltage for this reason: smaller current means less loss in the wires.
Why doesn't a steady DC source such as a battery on the primary coil keep producing a voltage in the secondary coil?→ 二次コイルの誘導起電力は磁束の変化の速さ(dΦ/dt)に比例する。 The induced voltage in the secondary is proportional to how fast the flux changes (dΦ/dt). With DC the current is steady and the flux does not change, so no voltage is induced except at the moment of connecting.
Common misconceptions
A step-up transformer also increases energy." In an ideal transformer P1 = P2; the current ratio drops as the voltage rises, so no energy is created.
Doubling the turns ratio always halves the primary current." What halves is the current ratio I2/I1; with the same supply voltage and load R, the primary current actually becomes 4 times larger.

This is a lossless ideal transformer model with the primary fixed at 100 V RMS and N1 = 100 turns. Frequencies of 1–10 Hz stand for 50 Hz mains, with time stretched so it can be seen. You may add that real transformers have core and copper losses and a magnetizing current, so P2 is slightly less than P1.
