Air Column Resonance: Standing Longitudinal Waves
Students understand that incident and reflected waves in a tube combine into a longitudinal standing wave, and that because a closed end is a displacement node and an open end is a displacement antinode, a closed tube resonates only at odd harmonics f=(2n−1)v/4L while an open tube resonates at all harmonics f=nv/2L.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When sound forms a standing wave in a tube closed at one end, do you think the air particles at the closed end move a lot or stay still? What about at the open end?💡 壁のすぐ前の空気は、壁の向こうへ動けるかどうかを考えてみましょう。Think about whether the air right next to the wall can move into the wall.
For a closed tube and an open tube of the same length, which do you think has the lower lowest resonant frequency?💡 それぞれの管の中に、波長のどれだけの部分が入るかを考えてみましょう。Think about what fraction of a wavelength fits inside each tube.
Try it
In the starting state ("Closed tube", Tube length L = 0.60 m, Mode n = 1, Frequency f ≈ 142 Hz), watch the particles in the top panel with their antinode/node labels, and the incident (blue), reflected (orange) and sum (white) curves in the graph. Compare how particles move at the right end (closed) and the left end (open).
Change Mode n to 2 and then 3, and record the automatically tuned frequency f (425 Hz, 708 Hz), the harmonic shown (e.g. "3rd harmonic") and the number of nodes and antinodes.
Move the Frequency f slider away from resonance (e.g. 300 Hz, 400 Hz) and watch the "Match" value, the amplitude in the graph and the red dot on the resonance curve below. Press "Tune to resonance" to go back.
Switch to "Open tube". Keeping L = 0.60 m, set Mode n to 1, 2 and 3, and record the resonant frequencies f₁, f₂, f₃ and how much the air moves at both ends (the dashed envelope in the graph).
Switch between "Closed tube" and "Open tube" and compare where the peaks of the resonance curve (n=1, 2, 3) are. Change Tube length L, then press "Tune to resonance" and check how the resonant frequency changes.
Check
When the closed tube is resonating, how do the particles move at the closed end (right) and the open end (left)?→ 閉端の粒子は動かず「節」になり、開端の粒子は大きく左右に振動して「腹」になっていた。 Particles at the closed end do not move (a node), and particles at the open end swing back and forth the most (an antinode). In the graph, the sum displacement is always 0 at the closed end and largest at the open end.
For the closed tube with L = 0.60 m, what were the resonant frequencies for n = 1, 2, 3, and which harmonics are they?→ 141.7 Hz(第1倍音、λ = 2.40 m = 4L)、425.0 Hz(第3倍音、λ = 0.80 m)、708.3 Hz(第5倍音、λ = 0.48 m)。 141.7 Hz (1st harmonic, λ = 2.40 m = 4L), 425.0 Hz (3rd harmonic, λ = 0.80 m) and 708.3 Hz (5th harmonic, λ = 0.48 m). Only odd multiples, in the ratio 1 : 3 : 5, appear.
For the open tube with L = 0.60 m, what were the resonant frequencies for n = 1, 2, 3, and what happened at both ends?→ 283.3 Hz(λ = 1.20 m = 2L)、566.7 Hz、850.0 Hz 283.3 Hz (λ = 1.20 m = 2L), 566.7 Hz and 850.0 Hz, so all whole-number harmonics in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3 appear. Both ends are antinodes where the displacement is largest.
Starting from the closed tube at n = 3, what changed when f was moved to 300 Hz or 400 Hz?→ 一致度が 100 % から約 10 %(300 Hz)、約 34 %(400 Hz)に下がり、管内の振動と下段の合成変位が小さくなった。 The match dropped from 100 % to about 10 % (300 Hz) or about 34 % (400 Hz), and the vibration in the tube and the sum displacement in the graph became small. The red dot on the resonance curve moved down off the peak.
Think further
At a displacement node the particles do not move, yet the change in pressure (compression and rarefaction) is largest there. The particles on either side of a node move in opposite directions, so they alternately crowd toward the node and pull away from it, making the node alternately compressed and rarefied. At an antinode neighbors move the same way, so the density hardly changes. So a displacement node is a pressure antinode, and a displacement antinode is a pressure node.
Why is the fundamental frequency of a closed tube half that of an open tube of the same length?→ 閉管の基本振動では管に λ/4 が入る(λ = 4L)のに対し、開管では λ/2 が入る(λ = 2L)。 In a closed tube's fundamental, λ/4 fits in the tube (λ = 4L), while in an open tube λ/2 fits (λ = 2L). The wavelength is twice as long, so by v = fλ the frequency is half (141.7 Hz versus 283.3 Hz for L = 0.60 m).
Common misconceptions
At an open end the air is free, so nothing vibrates there (a node)." At an open end the pressure is fixed at outside air pressure, so the displacement is actually largest (an antinode).
Closed and open tubes both resonate at every harmonic." A closed tube needs a node at one end and an antinode at the other, so it resonates only at odd harmonics.

The speed of sound is v = 340 m/s and the end correction is ignored. For the closed tube, the left end (speaker side) is open and the right end is closed; the model includes a small loss at the left end each round trip, so the amplitude never drops to 0 off resonance. Particle motion is shown much slower than the real frequency and the displacement is enlarged. Changing Tube length L does not retune f automatically, so tell students to use "Tune to resonance".
