Beats and Resonance (Air Column)

物理基礎 · 物理単元: うなりと共鳴(気柱・弦)Beats and Resonance (Air Column) 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that two sounds with slightly different frequencies combine to produce beats with period T=1/Δf, and that a closed air column resonates when its length is L=(2n−1)λ/4, with a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If tuning forks of 400 Hz and 408 Hz are sounded together, how do you think the loudness will sound? What happens if the difference between the two frequencies gets larger?💡 2つの波の山どうしがそろう時刻と、山と谷が重なる時刻があることを考えてみましょう。Think about the moments when the crests of the two waves line up and the moments when a crest meets a trough.
If you sound a 400 Hz tuning fork over a tube closed at the bottom by water and slowly lower the water, at what tube lengths do you think the sound will become loud?💡 閉じた端と開いた端で、空気がどれだけ自由に動けるかを考えてみましょう。Think about how freely the air can move at the closed end and at the open end.

On the "A Beats" tab, keep f₁ = 400 Hz and Δf = 8.0 Hz and look at the three rows: y₁, y₂ and the sum y = y₁ + y₂. At the green lines (in phase) and red dotted lines (out of phase), check the amplitude of the sum wave and the "vol" meter on the right.
Move the Δf slider to 2 Hz, 16 Hz and 0 Hz, and record the spacing between peaks of the yellow envelope, the "T = 1/Δf = … ms" arrow and the "Beat period" value in the panel.
Switch to the "B Air column" tab. With f = 400 Hz and L = 15.0 cm, look at the "Response" value and the standing wave in the tube. Press "Next resonance" to jump to L1, L2 and L3, and each time check the "Resonance! L ≈ … cm" message and the positions of × (nodes) and ▽ (antinodes).
From a resonance, press "L +1" twice to move 2 cm away, and see how the response and the resonance message change.
Set the f slider to 500 Hz and record how λ = v/f and the list of resonance lengths L1, L2, L3 change. You can also drag the tube (water surface) up and down to change L.

Check

What was the beat period T when Δf = 8 Hz? What happened when Δf was 2 Hz and 16 Hz?→ Δf = 8 Hz で T = 0.125 s(125 ms)、2 Hz で 0.500 s(500 ms)、16 Hz で 0.0625 s(62.5 ms)。 At Δf = 8 Hz, T = 0.125 s (125 ms); at 2 Hz, 0.500 s (500 ms); at 16 Hz, 0.0625 s (62.5 ms). The larger Δf, the closer together the envelope peaks, following T = 1/Δf. At Δf = 0 there are no beats.
When does the sum wave reach its largest amplitude (2A), and when does it drop to 0?→ y₁ と y₂ の山どうしがそろう同位相の時刻(緑の線)で強め合って 2A になり、山と谷が重なる逆位相の時刻(赤の点線)で弱め合って 0 になる。It reaches 2A at in-phase moments (green lines), when the crests of y₁ and y₂ line up and reinforce each other, and drops to 0 at out-of-phase moments (red dotted lines), when a crest meets a trough and they cancel.
At f = 400 Hz, what tube lengths gave resonance? Was the closed end (water surface) and the open end a node or an antinode?→ λ = 85.0 cm で、L1 ≈ 21.3 cm、L2 ≈ 63.7 cm、L3 ≈ 106.3 cm(λ/4 の 1、3、5 倍)。 With λ = 85.0 cm, L1 ≈ 21.3 cm, L2 ≈ 63.7 cm and L3 ≈ 106.3 cm (1, 3 and 5 times λ/4). In every case the closed end (water surface) was a × (node) and the open end was a ▽ (antinode).
When L was moved 2 cm away from a resonance, what happened to the response? How did the resonance lengths change at f = 500 Hz?→ 応答振幅は 100 % から 50 % 前後(400 Hz の L2 で約 49 %)に下がり、「共鳴していない」と表示された。 The response dropped from 100 % to around 50 % (about 49 % near L2 at 400 Hz) and "Not resonating" was shown. At 500 Hz, λ = 68.0 cm and the lengths became shorter: L1 = 17.0 cm, L2 = 51.0 cm, L3 = 85.0 cm.

Think further

When tuning an instrument, why do players sound a reference note together with their own note and adjust until the beats slow down?→ うなりの回数は 1 秒あたり |f₁ − f₂| 回なので、うなりが遅くなるほど2つの振動数の差が小さい。 The number of beats per second is |f₁ − f₂|, so slower beats mean a smaller frequency difference. When the beats disappear (Δf = 0), the frequencies match.
What do you get if you find the wavelength from the difference between neighboring resonance lengths, L2 − L1? Why is this method useful in real experiments?→ L2 − L1 = λ/2 なので λ = 2(L2 − L1)。 L2 − L1 = λ/2, so λ = 2(L2 − L1). At 400 Hz this gives 2 × (63.7 − 21.3) ≈ 85 cm, matching the displayed λ. In a real tube the antinode sits slightly outside the open end (end correction), but taking the difference cancels it, so the wavelength comes out accurately.

Mode A plays at 1/50 of real time. Mode B ignores the end correction and reports "resonance" when L is within ±1 cm of the theoretical value. The response A(L) = α/√(cos²kL + α²) (α = 0.08) is a simple loss model and never drops to 0 away from resonance. Point out that the picture in the tube draws the longitudinal displacement as a sideways graph.
