音の正体は縦波:疎密波Sound Is a Longitudinal Wave
ねらいGoal:音は空気の粒子が伝わる向きと同じ向きに前後に振動する縦波(疎密波)であり、粒子自身は平衡位置のまわりで往復するだけで、密・疎の状態が右へ伝わることを理解する。Students understand that sound is a longitudinal (compression) wave in which air particles vibrate back and forth along the direction of travel, staying near their own equilibrium positions while the compressions and rarefactions move on.

1予想しよう(触る前に)Predict (before you touch anything)
- スピーカーから耳まで音が届くとき、スピーカーの前の空気の粒子そのものが耳まで運ばれていくと思いますか。When sound travels from a speaker to your ear, do you think the air particles in front of the speaker are carried all the way to your ear?💡 水面の波で浮かんでいる木の葉がどう動くかを思い出してみましょう。Recall how a leaf floating on water moves when a water wave passes.
- 空気の粒子が最も混み合っている場所(密)では、粒子は止まっていると思いますか、それとも速く動いていると思いますか。At the place where air particles are most crowded (a compression), do you think the particles are standing still or moving fast?💡 粒子が混み合うには、左右の粒子がどちらへ動いている必要があるか考えてみましょう。Think about which way the particles on each side must be moving for them to crowd together.
2動かしてみようTry it
- 「一時停止」を押して画面を止め、上から「変位 u(x,t)」「密度 ρ(x,t)」と粒子の列の3段が同じ横位置でそろっていることを確認する。赤い実線(密)と青い破線(疎)の位置で、粒子の混み具合と2つのグラフの値を見比べる。Press "Pause" to freeze the screen. Check that the three layers, "Displacement u(x,t)", "Density ρ(x,t)" and the row of particles, line up at the same horizontal positions. At the red solid lines (compressions) and blue dashed lines (rarefactions), compare how crowded the particles are with the values on the two graphs.
- 「再生」を押し、オレンジの粒子Aと緑の粒子Bの動きと、小さな点(平衡位置 x0)を見比べる。右のパネルの「粒子A」「粒子B」の u、v、ρ/ρ0 の表示と、粒子の上の速度の矢印の向き・長さを観察する。粒子をタップすると別の粒子を選べる。Press "Play" and watch orange Particle A and green Particle B move relative to their small dots (equilibrium positions x0). Observe the u, v and ρ/ρ0 readouts for "Particle A" and "Particle B" in the side panel and the direction and length of the velocity arrow above each particle. Tap another particle to select it.
- 「③ 表示する波の数」を 1、3、5 と変え、粒子列の下にある λ/2 と λ の矢印で、密〜疎と密〜密の間隔を確かめる。Change "③ Waves shown" to 1, 3 and 5, and use the λ/2 and λ arrows under the particle row to check the spacing from compression to rarefaction and from compression to compression.
- 「① 振動数 f」を 250 Hz から 1000 Hz に上げ、スライダー下の説明文で周期 T、画面上の1周期の時間、λ=v/f の値がどう変わるかを記録する。Raise "① Frequency f" from 250 Hz to 1000 Hz and record how the period T, the on-screen time for one period and the value of λ=v/f in the notes below the sliders change.
- 「② 振幅 A」を 2.5 から 0.5 に下げ、粒子の振れ幅と、密度グラフの山の高さ(密と疎の差)がどう変わるかを見る。Lower "② Amplitude A" from 2.5 to 0.5 and see how the particles' swing and the height of the density graph (the difference between compression and rarefaction) change.
3確かめようCheck
- 再生中、選んだ粒子Aは画面の右へ流れていきましたか。During playback, did the selected Particle A drift off to the right across the screen?→ 流れていかない。粒子Aは自分の平衡位置(小さな点)の左右を往復するだけで、右へ移動していくのは赤線(密)と青破線(疎)の位置、つまり密・疎の状態である。No. Particle A only moves back and forth around its own equilibrium position (the small dot). What moves to the right are the red lines (compressions) and blue dashed lines (rarefactions), that is, the state of compression and rarefaction.
- 密(赤線)の中心にある粒子の変位 u と速度はどうなっていますか。疎(青破線)の中心ではどうですか。At the center of a compression (red line), what are the particle's displacement u and velocity? What about at the center of a rarefaction (blue dashed line)?→ どちらも u≈0(平衡位置)で、速さは最大になっている。密の中心では右向き(伝わる向き)、疎の中心では左向きに最も速く動いている。ステータス表示も「u≈0・速度最大(右向き)=密の中心」のようになる。In both cases u≈0 (the particle is at its equilibrium position) and its speed is largest. At a compression center it moves fastest to the right (the direction of travel); at a rarefaction center it moves fastest to the left. The readout also shows messages such as "u≈0, fastest (rightward) = center of compression".
- 粒子の速度が 0 になる(灰色の点線の)位置は、密・疎とどんな関係にありますか。Where are particles momentarily at rest (the gray dotted lines) compared with the compressions and rarefactions?→ 変位 u が最大(または最小)になる位置で、密と疎のちょうど中間にあり、密度はもとの密度 ρ0 とほぼ同じ。たとえば u=−0.98A のとき v=0.22Aω、ρ/ρ0≈1.09 のように表示された。They are where the displacement u is largest (or most negative), exactly halfway between a compression and a rarefaction, where the density is about the normal density ρ0. For example, the readout showed u=−0.98A with v=0.22Aω and ρ/ρ0≈1.09.
- f を 250 Hz から 1000 Hz に上げると、周期と波長はどうなりましたか。When f was raised from 250 Hz to 1000 Hz, what happened to the period and the wavelength?→ 周期 T は 4.00 ms から 1.00 ms に短くなり(1000倍遅くした画面上では 4.00 s から 1.00 s)、波長 λ=v/f は 1.36 m から 0.34 m に 1/4 になった(v=340 m/s で一定)。密〜密の間隔はいつも λ、密〜疎は λ/2 である。The period T shortened from 4.00 ms to 1.00 ms (from 4.00 s to 1.00 s on screen at 1000× slower), and the wavelength λ=v/f became one quarter, from 1.36 m to 0.34 m (v stays 340 m/s). Compression to compression is always λ, and compression to rarefaction is λ/2.
4考えようThink further
- 粒子の速度が最大の場所で密になるのはなぜでしょうか。密の左右の粒子の動きに注目して説明しましょう。Why does a compression form where particles move fastest? Explain by looking at how the particles on either side of a compression are moving.→ 密の中心のすぐ左の粒子は右にずれ(u>0)、すぐ右の粒子は左にずれ(u<0)ているので、粒子が中心に寄り集まって混み合う。そのとき中心の粒子自身はちょうど平衡位置を通過中で、単振動では平衡位置で速さが最大になる。Just to the left of a compression center the particles are displaced to the right (u>0), and just to the right they are displaced to the left (u<0), so particles crowd toward the center. Meanwhile the particle at the center is passing through its equilibrium position, where an oscillating particle moves fastest.
- 音速 340 m/s のとき、振動数 500 Hz の音で隣り合う密と密の間隔は何 m になるでしょうか。シミュレーションで確かめましょう。If the speed of sound is 340 m/s, how far apart are neighboring compressions for a 500 Hz sound? Check it in the simulation.→ 密〜密の間隔は波長 λ なので λ=v/f=340/500=0.68 m。f を 500 Hz にすると説明文に λ=0.68 m と表示される。密〜疎はその半分の 0.34 m。Compression to compression is one wavelength, so λ=v/f=340/500=0.68 m. Setting f to 500 Hz makes the note show λ=0.68 m. Compression to rarefaction is half of that, 0.34 m.
よくある誤解Common misconceptions
- 「音が伝わるとき、空気そのものがスピーカーから耳まで流れていく」という誤解。粒子は平衡位置のまわりを往復するだけで、伝わるのは密・疎の状態(エネルギー)である。"When sound travels, the air itself flows from the speaker to the ear." Each particle only oscillates around its equilibrium position; what travels is the pattern of compressions and rarefactions (and energy).
- 「密や疎の中心では粒子が止まっている」という誤解。密・疎の中心では粒子は平衡位置を最も速く通過しており、速度が 0 になるのは変位が最大となる密と疎の中間である。"Particles are at rest at the centers of compressions and rarefactions." At those centers particles pass through equilibrium at top speed; they are momentarily at rest halfway between, where displacement is largest.

変位は小振幅近似の u=A·sin(kx−ωt)、密度は ρ/ρ0≈1−∂u/∂x で計算しており、実際の空気の変位は原子・分子程度以下なので大きく拡大して描いている。画面上の縞の間隔は「③ 表示する波の数」だけで決まり、f を変えても画面の縞の間隔は変わらず、周期と λ の数値(m)が変わる点に注意。時間は「時間スケール」で 250〜4000 倍遅くして表示している。Displacement uses the small-amplitude form u=A·sin(kx−ωt) and density uses ρ/ρ0≈1−∂u/∂x; real air displacements are about atomic size or smaller, so the motion is greatly enlarged. The on-screen stripe spacing is set only by "③ Waves shown"; changing f does not change the spacing on screen, only the period and the λ value in metres. Time is shown 250–4000× slower via "Time scale".
