Heating Curve: From Melting Ice to Boiling
Students understand from the heating curve that when ice is heated at constant power, the temperature stays constant during melting (0 °C) and boiling (100 °C) because all the heat goes into the change of state (latent heat), and that otherwise ice, with its smaller specific heat, warms faster than water.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If ice at -20 °C is heated steadily at the same power, what shape will the temperature–time graph have? Will it keep rising in a straight line?💡 氷がとけている途中のコップの氷水は何 °C か思い出そう。Recall the temperature of a glass of ice water while the ice is still melting.
If the amount of ice is doubled, what happens to the time it takes to melt and to the temperature while it melts?💡 時間と温度を分けて考えよう。 Think about time and temperature separately. What does the heat needed for melting depend on?
Try it
With the starting values (Power 1000 W, Mass of ice 100 g, Speed ×5), press "Reset" and watch the temperature-time graph, the beaker and the molecule model until the end. Change Speed to ×20 or ×50 if needed.
Record "Slope: ice … °C/s · water … °C/s" and "Flat parts: melting … s · boiling … s" from the panel and compare them with the slopes and flat parts on the graph.
During heating, watch how the "Speed" bar and the "vs 0°C ×" value under the molecule model behave while the temperature rises compared with the flat parts (melting and boiling).
Set Mass of ice to 200 g (the simulation resets automatically) and compare the length and temperature of the flat parts, and the slopes, with the 100 g case.
Set Mass of ice back to 100 g, set Power to 2000 W, press "Reset", and see how the slopes and the times of the flat parts change.
Check
Where on the graph did the temperature stay constant, and what was happening then?→ 0 °C(融解中、約 33.4 s)と 100 °C(沸騰中、約 226.0 s)の 2 か所。 At 0 °C (melting, about 33.4 s) and at 100 °C (boiling, about 226.0 s). Heating continues, but the heat is used to melt the ice or turn the water into vapor, so the temperature does not rise.
At 1000 W and 100 g, what are the warming slopes of ice and water? Which is steeper?→ 氷 4.76 °C/s、水 2.38 °C/s で、氷の方が 2 倍急。 Ice 4.76 °C/s and water 2.38 °C/s, so ice is twice as steep. The specific heat of ice (2.1 J/(g·K)) is half that of water (4.2 J/(g·K)), so the same heat raises its temperature twice as much.
With 200 g of ice, how did the length and the temperature of the flat parts change?→ 平坦部の長さは 2 倍(融解 66.8 s、沸騰 452.0 s)になり、傾きは半分(氷 2.38 °C/s、水 1.19 °C/s)になったが、平坦部の温度は 0 °C と 100 °C のまま変わらない。The flat parts became twice as long (melting 66.8 s, boiling 452.0 s) and the slopes were halved (ice 2.38 °C/s, water 1.19 °C/s), but the flat-part temperatures stayed at 0 °C and 100 °C.
What did the molecules' "Speed" bar do during melting and boiling?→ 温度が一定なので速さのバーもほぼ一定のままで、氷の格子がくずれて液体に、液体から気体の分子へと並び方(状態)だけが変わっていった。 Because the temperature was constant, the Speed bar stayed almost the same; only the arrangement changed, from an ice lattice to liquid and from liquid to gas molecules. The bar grew only while the temperature was rising.
Think further
Why is the boiling flat part about 6.8 times longer than the melting flat part?→ 水 1 g を水蒸気にするのに必要な熱(蒸発熱 2260 J/g)が、氷 1 g をとかす熱(融解熱 334 J/g)の約 6.8 倍だから。 Because the heat needed to vaporize 1 g of water (heat of vaporization 2260 J/g) is about 6.8 times the heat needed to melt 1 g of ice (heat of fusion 334 J/g). Becoming a gas requires almost completely separating the molecules, which takes much more energy.
If the power is raised to 2000 W, does the flat-part temperature change? How does the whole graph change?→ 平坦部の温度は 0 °C と 100 °C のまま。 The flat parts stay at 0 °C and 100 °C. Twice as much heat is added each second, so the slopes double (ice 9.52 °C/s, water 4.76 °C/s), the flat parts are halved (melting 16.7 s, boiling 113.0 s), and the whole process goes from about 306 s to about 153 s.
Common misconceptions
The idea that a substance's temperature always rises as long as it is heated. During a change of state, the heat goes into the change and the temperature stays constant.
The idea that stronger heating or a larger amount changes the melting or boiling temperature. Only the length of the flat parts changes; the melting and boiling points stay the same.

Idealized model: all the heat goes into the sample (the beaker's heat capacity and heat loss are ignored), pressure is 1 atm, specific heats are 2.1 J/(g·K) for ice and 4.2 J/(g·K) for water, the heat of fusion is 334 J/g and the heat of vaporization is 2260 J/g; evaporation before boiling is ignored. The molecule speeds are a schematic exaggerated to increase with temperature. Changing Power mid-run takes effect immediately (the graph gets a bend), while changing Mass of ice restarts from the beginning.
