Mitosis Animation

Students understand that in mitosis, chromosomes copied during interphase condense in prophase, line up on the equatorial plane in metaphase, and have their sister chromatids pulled to opposite poles in anaphase, so that the two daughter cells receive the same number and kinds of chromosomes as the parent cell.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If a cell with 4 chromosomes undergoes mitosis, how many chromosomes do you think each daughter cell will have?💡 分裂の前に何が「2倍」になっているか、そして後期に何が「2つに分かれる」のかを考えてみましょう。Think about what is doubled before division begins, and what splits in two during anaphase.
Do you think the X-shaped chromosomes you see under a microscope are also visible when the cell is not dividing (interphase)?💡 DNAが細い糸のままでいるときと、ぎゅっと巻き縮められたときとで、見え方はどう違うでしょうか。How would DNA look different when it is a long thin thread compared with when it is tightly coiled up?

Try it

With the starting settings (Chromosomes 4, Speed 1.00×, Tilt 20°), play one full cycle (about 28 s) and watch the phase name at the top and the explanation text change in the order Interphase → Prophase → Metaphase → Anaphase → Telophase → Cytokinesis.
Press "Pause", then click "Interphase", "Prophase", "Metaphase", "Anaphase", "Telophase" and "Cytokinesis" on the progress bar one by one, and compare whether the nuclear envelope (purple circle) is present, the shape of the chromosomes, and the spindle fibers (teal lines) in each phase.
Change "Chromosomes" to "6", press "Play", and count the chromosomes and check their colors in Metaphase, Anaphase and Cytokinesis. Setting "Speed" to 0.50× makes the Anaphase movement easier to follow.
Pause in "Metaphase" and move the "Tilt" slider to 0° and then to 45° to see the equatorial plane (dashed line) change from a straight line into an ellipse.

Check

In which phases can you see the nuclear envelope (purple circle)? When does it disappear and when does it form again?→ 間期と前期の前半には1つの核膜がある。 There is one nuclear envelope in Interphase and early Prophase. It disappears at the end of Prophase and is absent in Metaphase and Anaphase. In Telophase it forms again around the chromosomes at each pole, giving two nuclei.
In Metaphase, what shape are the chromosomes and where are they lined up? Where are the spindle fibers attached?→ 2本の姉妹染色分体がセントロメア(黒い点)で結ばれたX字形で、赤道面(点線の楕円)の上に並んでいる。 Each chromosome is X-shaped: two sister chromatids joined at the centromere (black dot). They are lined up on the equatorial plane (dashed ellipse). The spindle fibers run from the centrosomes at both poles to the centromere region (kinetochore) of each chromosome.
In Anaphase, what happens to each X-shaped chromosome? Compare the colors of the chromatids moving to the upper and lower poles.→ セントロメアで分かれて2本の染色分体になり、紡錘糸に引かれて反対の極へ対称に移動する。 It splits at the centromere into two chromatids, which are pulled along the spindle fibers symmetrically to opposite poles. Each pole receives one chromatid of every color.
With "Chromosomes" set to 6, how many chromosomes does each daughter cell contain after Cytokinesis?→ 6本(6色すべて)。 Six, one of each of the six colors. Each daughter cell receives the same number and kinds of chromosomes as the parent cell.

Think further

Why does the number of chromosomes not halve even though the cell divides in two? Explain by linking it to what happens during interphase.→ 間期にDNAが複製され、各染色体は同じDNAをもつ2本の姉妹染色分体からなるようになる。 During interphase the DNA is copied, so each chromosome comes to consist of two identical sister chromatids. In anaphase the sisters are separated one to each pole, so each daughter cell receives the same number of chromosomes, carrying the same genetic information, as the parent.
When you observe onion root-tip cells under a microscope, cells in interphase are the most common. Interphase, when the cell grows and copies its DNA, is by far the longest part of the cell cycle, and the stages of division are short. The fraction of cells found in a phase is roughly proportional to how long that phase lasts.

Phase lengths are evened out for viewing; in a real cell cycle, interphase takes up most of the time. Each chromosome has its own color for tracking, but real chromosomes are not colored, and the two chromosomes of the same length (homologous chromosomes) are also shown in different colors. In real cells cytokinesis usually begins during telophase; here it is shown as a separate stage, and one daughter cell carries on into the next interphase.
