Calorimeter Simulator: Mixing Hot and Cold Water to Thermal Equilibrium
Predict (before you touch anything)
If 200 g of hot water at 80 ℃ is mixed with 200 g of cold water at 20 ℃, what will the final temperature be? What if there is 400 g of hot water instead?💡 お湯が失う熱量と冷水が得る熱量の関係を考え、水の量が多い方の温度はどれくらい変わりにくいかを考えよう。Think about how the heat lost by the hot water relates to the heat gained by the cold water, and how much harder it is to change the temperature of a larger amount of water.
After mixing, does the temperature change at a steady rate, or does the rate change over time?💡 熱が移る勢いは、2つの水の温度差とどう関係しそうか考えよう。Think about how the rate of heat flow might depend on the temperature difference between the two waters.
Try it
With the starting values (Hot water mass 200 g, Hot water temp. 80 ℃, cold water 200 g / 20 ℃), press "Start mixing". Compare the thermometers with "Heat lost" and "Heat gained" in the panel.
Read the hot and cold temperatures at about 14 s and about 28 s of Time, and see how the temperature difference shrinks. When equilibrium is reached (the button changes to "Mix again"), record the final temperature and the heat values.
Set Hot water mass to 400 g, check "Equilibrium temp.", then press "Start mixing" and watch until the end.
Set Hot water mass to 100 g and Hot water temp. to 90 ℃, press "Start mixing", and see where the equilibrium temperature falls between the two starting temperatures.
During mixing, watch how the speed of the particles in the container and the "Mean molecular speed (theory)" values change with temperature.
Check
When 200 g at 80 ℃ and 200 g at 20 ℃ are mixed, what are the equilibrium temperature and the heat lost by the hot water?→ 平衡温度 50.0 ℃。 The equilibrium temperature is 50.0 ℃. Heat lost and heat gained are both 25,200 J (200 g × 4.2 J/(g·K) × 30 K), so they are equal.
During mixing, were the "Lost" and "Gained" bars always the same height? What about the "Total" bar?→ いつも同じ高さで、「失−得の差」は 0 J のまま。 Yes, always the same; "Lost − gained" stays at 0 J. The height of the "Total" bar (heat above 0 ℃) never changes; only the red (hot) and blue (cold) parts change. Heat is conserved.
With 400 g of hot water, what was the equilibrium temperature? How does it compare with the simple average of 50 ℃?→ 60.0 ℃。 60.0 ℃. Because there is twice as much hot water, the equilibrium is closer to the hot temperature ((400×80 + 200×20) ÷ 600 = 60). With 100 g at 90 ℃ it is 43.3 ℃, closer to the cold temperature.
Did the temperatures change at a steady rate?→ 一定ではない。 No. For 200 g each, the difference went from 60 ℃ to about 22 ℃ (61.0 ℃ and 39.0 ℃) at about 14 s, and to about 8 ℃ (54.1 ℃ and 45.9 ℃) at about 28 s. The smaller the difference, the slower the change, and the temperatures never overshoot the equilibrium.
Think further
What temperature of hot water (100 g) must be mixed with 200 g of cold water at 20 ℃ to end at 40 ℃? Calculate, then check with the simulation.→ 冷水が得る熱量 200 × 4.2 × (40 − 20) = 16,800 J をお湯が失うので、100 × 4.2 × (T − 40) = 16,800 より T = 80 ℃。 The cold water gains 200 × 4.2 × (40 − 20) = 16,800 J, which the hot water must lose: 100 × 4.2 × (T − 40) = 16,800, so T = 80 ℃. Setting Hot water mass 100 g and Hot water temp. 80 ℃ gives an equilibrium of 40.0 ℃.
When this experiment is done with a real cup, the final temperature is often lower than calculated. In reality the container (calorimeter) itself absorbs heat, and heat also escapes to the surrounding air. This simulation assumes perfect insulation and ignores the container's heat capacity, so heat lost and heat gained match exactly.
Common misconceptions
The idea that mixed water always ends at the simple average of the two temperatures. In fact it ends closer to the temperature of the part with the larger heat capacity (mass × specific heat).
The idea that "coldness" flows from the cold water into the hot water. What moves is heat (energy), and it always flows from the hotter to the colder side.

Idealized model: the cold water is fixed at 200 g and 20 ℃, the specific heat of water is 4.2 J/(g·K), and the container is perfectly insulated with its heat capacity ignored. After mixing, the hot and cold parts are still shown with separate temperatures, and heat flows in proportion to the temperature difference (the difference decays exponentially); the Time value is a rough guide, sped up about 10×. Particle speed differences are exaggerated for visibility, and "Mean molecular speed (theory)" is a reference value from the kinetic-theory formula.
