After the Push: Stopping by Friction Alone

After the Push: Stopping by Friction Alone 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that once the push stops, a sliding object is acted on only by kinetic friction and slows down at a constant acceleration a = −μg (independent of mass), so its v-t graph is a straight line of slope −μg and its stopping distance is v₀²/(2μg).

Predict (before you touch anything)

Compare a light block (1 kg) and a heavy block (10 kg), each starting to slide at 3 m/s on the same floor with no push. Which do you think slides farther before stopping?💡 重いブロックほど摩擦力は大きくなりますが、止めにくさ(慣性)も大きくなります。 A heavier block feels a larger friction force, but it is also harder to stop (more inertia). Think about both effects.
After the push stops, how do you think the block's speed decreases over time? After the push stops, what horizontal force acts on the block? Does that force change over time?

Try it

With the starting settings ("Mass m" 5.0 kg, "Push force F (any time)" 0 N, "Kinetic friction μ" 0.20), watch until the block stops and record the shape of the v-t graph, the "Stopping distance" and the "Time".
Change "Mass m" to 10.0 kg (the run restarts automatically). When it stops, compare "Stopping distance" and the measured v-t slope with the first result. Try 1.0 kg as well.
Set "Mass m" back to 5.0 kg, change "Kinetic friction μ" to 0.50, and record the stopping distance and time.
Set μ back to 0.20, press "Reset", set "Push force F (any time)" to 20 N and press "Start". After about 1 s, set F back to 0 N, and read the slopes of the v-t graph (colored for push / F=0) and the slope values in the readout.
Set "Kinetic friction μ" to 0.00 with F = 0 N and observe the motion.

Check

With μ = 0.20 and F = 0 N, what were the acceleration while slowing down, the stopping distance and the stopping time?→ a = −μg = −0.20×9.8 = −1.960 m/s² で、v-t グラフは傾き −1.960 m/s² の直線(実測と理論が一致)。 a = −μg = −0.20 × 9.8 = −1.960 m/s², and the v-t graph was a straight line with slope −1.960 m/s² (measured = theory). The block stopped after 2.296 m in 1.531 s, matching the theory v₀²/(2μg) = 2.296 m and v₀/(μg) = 1.531 s.
When the mass was changed to 10.0 kg or 1.0 kg, what happened to the stopping distance?→ どの質量でも傾きは −1.960 m/s²、停止距離は 2.296 m、所要時間は 1.531 s で変わらなかった。For every mass the slope stayed −1.960 m/s², the stopping distance 2.296 m, and the time 1.531 s; they did not change.
What were the stopping distance and time with μ = 0.50?→ 傾き −4.900 m/s²、停止距離 0.918 m、所要時間 0.612 s。 Slope −4.900 m/s², stopping distance 0.918 m, time 0.612 s. Making μ 2.5 times larger made both the distance and the time 1/2.5 as large.
What was the slope of the v-t graph while pushing with F = 20 N, and after F was set to 0 N (m = 5.0 kg, μ = 0.20)?→ 押している間は (F − μmg)/m = (20 − 9.80)/5.0 = +2.040 m/s² で加速し、F = 0 にしたあとは −1.960 m/s² で減速した。 While pushing, it sped up at (F − μmg)/m = (20 − 9.80)/5.0 = +2.040 m/s²; after F = 0 it slowed at −1.960 m/s². The graph is two straight lines with different slopes joined together, and when v reached 0 the friction arrow disappeared.

Think further

A heavier block has a larger friction force, so why doesn't the stopping distance depend on mass? Explain with the equation of motion.→ 摩擦力は μmg で質量に比例するが、運動方程式 ma = −μmg の両辺を m で割ると a = −μg となり、質量が消える。 Friction μmg is proportional to mass, but dividing ma = −μmg by m gives a = −μg, and the mass cancels. When friction becomes m times larger, the inertia also becomes m times larger, so the deceleration is the same. Therefore the stopping distance v₀²/(2μg) does not depend on mass either.
If a car's speed doubles, by what factor does its braking distance change? Reason with this model.→ 停止距離は v₀²/(2μg) なので、速さが2倍になると距離は 4倍になる(v-t グラフの三角形の面積が縦2倍・横2倍になる)。 The stopping distance is v₀²/(2μg), so doubling the speed makes it 4 times longer (the triangle under the v-t graph becomes twice as tall and twice as wide). If μ gets smaller, as on a wet road, the distance becomes even longer.

The initial speed is fixed at v₀ = 3 m/s, and starting from rest (static friction) is not covered. The calculation stops when v reaches 0; after that no friction acts and the block does not move backward. Moving "Mass m" or "Kinetic friction μ" restarts the run, while "Push force F" can be changed at any time during a run. Runs where F was used are marked as not comparable with the "F=0 theory". When it never stops (μ = 0), recording ends at 20 s.
