Galileo's Landing Experiment: Horizontal Projectile vs Free Fall
Students understand that a horizontally launched projectile can be split into uniform horizontal motion and vertical free fall, and that because the vertical motion is not affected by the horizontal initial speed, it lands at the same time as an object dropped from the same height (t = √(2h/g)).

Predict (before you touch anything)
From the same height, ball A is launched horizontally and, at the same instant, ball B is simply dropped. Which do you think reaches the ground first?💡 Aは横向きにも動きますが、下向きに引っぱる力は何でしょうか。 A also moves sideways, but what pulls each ball downward? Is that pull different for A and B?
If A is launched twice as fast, what do you think happens to the time until landing and to the horizontal distance A travels?💡 横向きの速さが、縦方向の落ち方を変えるかどうかを考えてみましょう。Consider whether the sideways speed changes the way the ball falls vertically.
Try it
At first the balls launch automatically with "Initial speed v0" = 8.0 m/s and "Height h" = 20 m. Watch the horizontal dashed line between A and B (same height) and "Height difference yA−yB" in the readout until they land.
After landing, look at the markers every 0.5 s (0.5s, 1.0s, 1.5s) and compare the horizontal spacing and the vertical spacing of A's positions.
Press "Reset", set "Initial speed v0" to 4.0 m/s and press "Launch". After landing, press "Reset" again, set v0 = 12.0 m/s and press "Launch". Record the landing time and the range R each time.
Press "Reset", set v0 = 8.0 m/s and "Height h" = 5 m, then press "Launch". Repeat with 45 m and record each landing time.
Press "Slow motion (0.25×)" and then "Launch", and check slowly that A and B are always at the same height.
Check
With v0 = 8.0 m/s and h = 20 m, what were the landing time and A's range? What was "Height difference yA−yB" during the fall?→ 「同時着地!」 Land together!" appeared; the landing time was t = √(2h/g) = 2.020 s and the range R = v0·t = 16.16 m. The height difference stayed 0.000 m throughout; for example at t = 1.00 s both A and B were at y = 15.10 m.
When v0 was changed to 4.0 m/s and 12.0 m/s (h = 20 m), what happened to the landing time and the range?→ 着地時刻はどちらも 2.020 s で変わらなかった。 The landing time stayed 2.020 s in both cases. The range was 8.08 m at 4.0 m/s and 24.24 m at 12.0 m/s, proportional to v0.
What were the landing times for heights of 5 m and 45 m?→ h = 5 m で 1.010 s、h = 45 m で 3.030 s。 1.010 s for h = 5 m and 3.030 s for h = 45 m. Nine times the height gives three times the time, so t is proportional to √h, as t = √(2h/g) predicts.
Using the markers every 0.5 s, how did A's horizontal and vertical spacings behave?→ 横方向は 0.5 s ごとに 4 m ずつ(v0 = 8.0 m/s で x = 4, 8, 12 m)の等間隔で、等速直線運動。 Horizontally the spacing is equal, 4 m every 0.5 s (x = 4, 8, 12 m at v0 = 8.0 m/s): uniform motion. Vertically the spacing grows (at the same heights as B): uniformly accelerated motion (free fall).
Think further
A also has sideways speed, so why doesn't it land later than B?→ 重力は鉛直下向きにだけ働くので、AもBも鉛直方向には初速0の自由落下 y = h − ½gt² をする。 Gravity acts only straight down, so both A and B undergo vertical free fall from rest, y = h − ½gt². The horizontal velocity does not affect the vertical motion (independence of motions), so they are at the same height at every moment and land together.
Without air resistance, what happens to a bullet fired horizontally and a bullet dropped at the same moment from the same height? Compare with the real world.→ 空気抵抗がなく地面が水平なら、どれほど速く撃っても同時に着地する(撃った弾は遠くに着くだけ)。 With no air resistance and level ground, they land at the same time no matter how fast the bullet is fired (the fired one simply lands far away). In reality, air resistance and uneven ground can cause small differences, but the idea that vertical motion does not depend on horizontal speed still holds.
Common misconceptions
The idea that throwing faster sideways keeps an object in the air longer. The landing time depends only on height; changing v0 leaves it at 2.020 s (h = 20 m).
The idea that a launched object travels straight sideways for a while before it starts to fall. It begins falling immediately, staying level with B and tracing a parabola.

Air resistance is ignored and g = 9.8 m/s². Moving a slider during a flight only affects the next launch (previewed by a yellow dotted line); the current flight does not change. "Launch" and "Reset" are the same button: pressing "Reset" after landing returns to the pre-launch preview. The first launch starts automatically when the page opens.
