Vertical Throw and v-t Graph
Students understand that in a vertical throw the velocity decreases at a constant rate, v = v₀ − gt, so the v-t graph is a straight line of slope −g that crosses the time axis at t = v₀/g (the highest point), and that the area under the graph (positive for upward, negative for downward) gives the displacement.

Predict (before you touch anything)
At the instant a ball thrown straight up reaches its highest point, what do you think its velocity and its acceleration are?💡 速度と加速度は別の量です。 Velocity and acceleration are different quantities. How does gravity act on the ball just before and just after the highest point?
When the ball returns to the point it was thrown from, is its speed greater than, less than, or equal to the launch speed (no air resistance)?💡 上がるのにかかる時間と、下りるのにかかる時間を比べて考えてみましょう。Think about how the time to go up compares with the time to come down.
Try it
Set "Initial velocity v₀" to 15.0 m/s, press "Earth 9.8" for g = 9.8 m/s², and press "Reset". Compare the ball's motion with the red line and the time cursor on the v-t graph (it pauses about 1 s at the top).
Press "Pause", then tap or drag on the v-t graph to move through time. Line the cursor up with the point where the line crosses the time axis ("Top (v=0)") and read the ball's position and the y and v values in the readout.
Drag the cursor to the end (t = 3.06 s) and record the yellow (positive) and cyan (negative) areas, "Displacement y = positive − negative", and "Return velocity".
Keeping v₀ = 15.0 m/s, press "Moon 1.6" and "Jupiter 24.8" and compare the slope of the line, the max height H, and "Return time 2v₀/g" (the dashed lines compare the Moon, Earth and Jupiter at the same v₀).
Return to "Earth 9.8" and set "Initial velocity v₀" to −10.0 m/s (thrown downward). Check that the graph starts below the time axis and note the color of the area.
Check
With v₀ = 15.0 m/s and g = 9.8 m/s², at what time did the graph cross the time axis, and what were the ball's position and velocity then?→ t = v₀/g = 1.53 s It crossed at t = v₀/g = 1.53 s. At that moment the ball was at its highest point, y = 11.48 m, with v = 0.00 m/s (momentarily at rest). This matches H = v₀²/(2g) = 11.48 m, and the yellow area was also 11.48 m.
When did the ball return to the launch point, and what was its velocity? How did the rise time compare with the fall time?→ 戻り時刻は 2v₀/g = 3.06 s、戻り速度は −15.00 m/s(= −v₀)で、速さは投げたときと同じで向きが下向き。 It returned at 2v₀/g = 3.06 s with velocity −15.00 m/s (= −v₀): the same speed as at launch, but pointing down. Rise 1.53 s = fall 1.53 s, so the motion is symmetric.
At the return (t = 3.06 s), what were the yellow and cyan areas and the displacement?→ 黄色(正) 11.48 m、水色(負) 11.48 m で、変位 y = 正 − 負 = 0.00 m。 Yellow (positive) 11.48 m and cyan (negative) 11.48 m, so displacement y = positive − negative = 0.00 m. It came down exactly as far as it went up, so it is back at the start.
Comparing the Moon, Earth and Jupiter at v₀ = 15.0 m/s, how did the slope and the max height change?→ g The larger g is, the steeper the line and the sooner it crosses the time axis. Max height: Moon 70.31 m (rise 9.38 s), Earth 11.48 m (1.53 s), Jupiter 4.54 m (0.60 s); H is inversely proportional to g.
Think further
The velocity is zero at the highest point, so why doesn't the ball stay there? Explain using the v-t graph.→ v-t The v-t graph is one straight line with the same slope −g before and after the top; it does not bend. So the acceleration is still −g (9.8 m/s² downward) at the top, and the velocity passes through zero and immediately becomes negative (downward). Zero velocity does not mean zero acceleration.
If the initial velocity is doubled, by what factor do the max height and the time to return change? Reason from the shape of the triangle on the graph.→ 傾き −g は変わらないので、v₀ が2倍になると黄色の三角形は縦も横も2倍になる。 The slope −g stays the same, so doubling v₀ makes the yellow triangle twice as tall and twice as wide. Time (width) doubles, and the area, which is the height H, becomes 2 × 2 = 4 times larger (H = v₀²/(2g)). In the simulation, changing v₀ from 7.5 to 15.0 m/s changes H from about 2.87 m to 11.48 m.
Common misconceptions
The idea that because the velocity is zero at the top, the acceleration (the effect of gravity) is also zero there. The slope of the graph is still −g at the top.
The idea that when the v-t graph goes below the time axis, the ball goes below the ground (or stops). Negative velocity means moving downward; the position is given by the area (positive − negative).

Air resistance is ignored and upward is positive. The readout's "Negative area" is shown as a magnitude (a positive number), and displacement is computed as positive − negative. With a negative v₀, the ball keeps falling below the start (y = 0), and the region below ground is drawn as a shaft. Tapping the graph near the top snaps the cursor exactly to t = v₀/g.
