Venus from the Ground: Elongation, Evening Star and Morning Star
Students understand that because Venus orbits inside Earth's orbit it never appears more than about 47° from the Sun; when it is east of the Sun it is seen in the western sky in the evening (evening star), when it is west of the Sun it is seen in the eastern sky before dawn (morning star), and its phase and apparent size change with its distance from Earth.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Do you think Venus can ever be seen high in the southern sky at midnight? At what times of day do you think it can be seen?💡 金星の軌道は地球の軌道の内側にあります。 Venus's orbit lies inside Earth's orbit. Seen from Earth, how far from the Sun's direction can Venus appear?
When Venus looks large, do you think its lit part is round (full) or thin (crescent)?💡 金星が地球に近づくのは、太陽・金星・地球がどのように並ぶときでしょうか。 How are the Sun, Venus and Earth arranged when Venus is closest to Earth? Which side of Venus faces Earth then?
Try it
Press "Pause", keep "② Time from sunset" at +20 min, and set "① Days" to 0 (superior conjunction). Record "Status", "Elongation", "Lit part", "Apparent size" and "Distance".
Move "① Days" to 100 → 221 → 280 → 292 → 305 → 363 → 500 and record the same values, along with the sky view (western or eastern sky), the "Telescope view" and the elongation graph.
At day 221, move "② Time from sunset" from −30 to +60 min and watch the Sun sink, the sky color change and the "Sun altitude" readout.
Press "Show brightness curve" and check when the purple brightness curve peaks compared with inferior conjunction and greatest elongation. Press "Play" to watch a whole synodic period.
Check
What was the largest elongation and on which days? Where in the sky and in what shape did Venus appear then?→ 221 日目に東方最大離角 +46.3°(夕方の西の空・宵の明星)、363 日目に西方最大離角 −46.3°(明け方の東の空・明けの明星)。 Greatest eastern elongation +46.3° on day 221 (western sky at dusk, evening star) and greatest western elongation −46.3° on day 363 (eastern sky at dawn, morning star). Both times the lit part was 50% (half-lit), the apparent size 24″ and the distance 0.69 AU.
How did Venus's appearance change just before and just after inferior conjunction (day 292)?→ 288 日目は離角 +6.3°(東)で「内合直前(宵の明星・まもなく見えなくなる)」、292 日目は離角ほぼ 0° で見えない、296 日目は −6.5°(西)で「内合直後(明けの明星として現れはじめる)」。 Day 288: elongation +6.3° (E), "Just before inferior conjunction (evening star, soon disappears)". Day 292: about 0°, not visible. Day 296: −6.5° (W), "Just after inferior conjunction (starting to appear as the morning star)". Venus switches from evening star to morning star across inferior conjunction.
How did the lit part, apparent size and distance differ near superior and inferior conjunction?→ 外合(0 日)は光る部分 100%(満月状)、視直径 10″、距離 1.72 天文単位で小さく丸い。 At superior conjunction (day 0): 100% lit (full), 10″, 1.72 AU — small and round. Near inferior conjunction (day 288): 1% lit (thin crescent), 60″, 0.28 AU — large. The closer Venus is, the larger and more crescent-shaped it looks.
According to the brightness curve, when is Venus brightest?→ 最大離角のときではなく、内合の約36日前と約36日後(三日月状で、視直径が大きいころ)に最大光度になった。 Not at greatest elongation but about 36 days before and 36 days after inferior conjunction (when Venus is a crescent but appears large). At inferior conjunction itself the lit side faces away from Earth, so brightness drops to nearly zero.
Think further
Why can't Venus be seen at midnight, and why does it never appear more than about 47° from the Sun?→ 金星の軌道(半径 0.72 天文単位)が地球の軌道の内側にあるため。 Because Venus's orbit (radius 0.72 AU) lies inside Earth's. Greatest elongation is the direction of a line from Earth tangent to Venus's orbit: sin θ = 0.72, so θ ≈ 46°. At midnight you look in the direction opposite the Sun (elongation 180°), where Venus can never be.
Why is the evening star seen only in the western sky in the evening, and not in the eastern sky before dawn?→ 宵の明星のとき金星は太陽の東側にあり、日周運動で太陽を追いかけるように動くので、太陽より後に昇り後に沈む。 As the evening star, Venus is east of the Sun, so in its daily motion it follows the Sun: it rises and sets after the Sun. It stays in the western sky after sunset, but in the morning it rises after the Sun, in a bright sky. The morning star is the opposite: it rises before the Sun.
Common misconceptions
The idea that Venus's phases, like the Moon's, are caused by Earth's shadow. Phases occur because the fraction of the sunlit half that faces Earth changes.
The idea that the evening star and the morning star are different objects. Both are Venus; the difference is whether it is east or west of the Sun.

Earth's and Venus's orbits are modeled as circles in one plane, with day 0 at superior conjunction (synodic period about 584 days). The sky view assumes 35°N and treats the ecliptic as a straight line at a fixed tilt, and the "Venus sets/rises" times use a daily motion of 0.25° per minute, so real seasonal differences in setting times are not shown. Venus's size in the sky view is exaggerated. The simulation plays automatically on load, so press "Pause" before reading values.
