Gas Molecules: Thermal Motion and Pressure
Predict (before you touch anything)
If the gas in the container is heated from 300 K to 600 K, what do you think happens to the speed of the molecules and to the pressure on the walls? Do you think the speed doubles?💡 温度は分子の運動エネルギー(½mv²)の平均と結びついています。 Temperature is linked to the average kinetic energy (½mv²) of the molecules. If the energy doubles, by what factor does the speed change?
If the container is made larger while the temperature and number of molecules stay the same, how do you think the number of collisions on a given part of the wall, and the pressure, will change?💡 分子の速さは同じでも、壁から壁まで移動する距離が変わります。The molecules move at the same speed, but the distance they travel from wall to wall changes.

In the starting state (Temperature T = 300 K, Volume V = 1.20 m³ (model), Molecules N = 50), watch the walls glow each time a molecule hits them, and read the measured "Pressure p" (about 80–88 kPa (model)) and the theory value NkT/V ≈ 83.3 kPa (model). Blue molecules are slow and red ones are fast. Use "Pause" to freeze the motion and look at how a molecule bounces off a wall at an angle.
Raise the "Temperature T (speed ∝ √T)" slider to 600 K and then 1000 K, waiting a few seconds each time, and record the "mean speed" and "Pressure p". Finally lower it to 100 K and record them again.
Set the temperature back to 300 K, then move the "Volume V (right-wall piston position)" slider to 2.00 m³ (model) and to 0.60 m³ (model), watching the right wall (piston) move. After the piston stops, press "Reset", wait a few seconds, and record the pressure.
Return the volume to 1.20 m³ (model) and set the "Number of molecules N" slider to 100 and then 25, recording how the pressure changes.
Check
When the temperature was raised from 300 K to 600 K and 1000 K, what happened to the mean speed and the pressure?→ 平均速さは約 500 → 約 710 → 約 920 m/s相当で、温度が2倍でも速さは約1.4倍(√2倍)にしかならない。 The mean speed went from about 500 to about 710 to about 920 m/s (model): doubling the temperature only made the speed about 1.4 times (√2 times) larger. The pressure went from about 84 to about 170 to about 280 kPa (model), increasing almost in proportion to the temperature. At 100 K the speed fell to about 290 m/s (model) and the pressure to about 28 kPa (model).
What were the approximate pressures at volumes of 0.60, 1.20 and 2.00 m³ (model)?→ 約 175、約 84、約 52 kPa相当(理論値 166.7、83.3、50.0)。 About 175, about 84 and about 52 kPa (model) (theory values 166.7, 83.3 and 50.0). Halving the volume roughly doubles the pressure: pressure is inversely proportional to volume (Boyle's law).
What happened to the pressure when the number of molecules was increased from 50 to 100?→ 約 84 kPa相当から約 160〜167 kPa相当へ、ほぼ2倍になった。 It roughly doubled, from about 84 to about 160–167 kPa (model). With 25 molecules it dropped to around 40 kPa (model). More molecules means more collisions with the walls.
Using "Pause", how does a molecule that hits a wall at an angle bounce off?→ 壁に垂直な向きの速度だけが逆向きになり、壁に平行な向きの速度は変わらないので、入射角と反射角が等しくなるようにはね返る(弾性衝突)。 Only the velocity component perpendicular to the wall reverses; the component parallel to the wall is unchanged, so the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence (an elastic collision). The speed, and so the color, does not change.
Think further
When the temperature doubled, the molecules became only about 1.4 times faster, yet the pressure almost doubled. When the speed becomes √2 times larger, (1) the momentum each collision gives to the wall (2mv) is √2 times larger, and (2) the number of hits on the wall per unit time is also √2 times larger. Pressure depends on the product of the two, so it grows by √2 × √2 = 2.
Using the results of this simulation, explain why a bicycle tire becomes firmer when you pump air into it.→ 空気を入れるとタイヤ内の分子数が増え、同じ体積・温度でも内壁に衝突する分子が増えるため、単位時間・単位面積あたりに与える運動量(圧力)が大きくなり、タイヤを内側から強く押すから。Pumping adds more molecules to the same volume at about the same temperature, so more molecules hit the inner wall each second. The momentum delivered per unit time and per unit area, which is the pressure, increases, and the air pushes the tire outward more strongly.
Common misconceptions
Pressure is a steady push that the gas exerts on the wall." In fact, pressure is the combined effect of a huge number of individual collisions, each transferring momentum to the wall.
If the temperature doubles, the molecules move twice as fast." Speed is proportional to √T, so doubling the temperature makes it only about 1.4 times faster. Also, the molecules do not all have the same speed; their speeds are spread out.

The model is two-dimensional, ignores collisions between molecules, and keeps the temperature fixed as if the container touches a heat bath at T (so changing the volume is an isothermal process). The measured pressure is computed from the last 2 seconds of collisions and fluctuates by about ±10%, so wait a few seconds or average several readings. Right after a large volume change the reading can stay off the theory value; pressing "Reset" (リセット) brings it back close to theory. Units such as "m³ (model)" and "kPa (model)" are scaled model values, not real SI quantities.
