Daily Motion of Northern Stars and Polaris
Students understand that, because of Earth's rotation, stars in the northern sky appear to turn counterclockwise around Polaris at about 15° per hour, that the altitude of Polaris equals the observer's latitude, and that the way stars move depends on latitude.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you watched the northern sky all night, how do you think the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia would move? Earth rotates around its axis. What lies in the direction where the axis points north?
How do you think the height of Polaris above the horizon would change if you looked at it from the equator or the North Pole instead of Japan?💡 地面(地平線)は、地球上のどこに立つかによって傾きが変わります。The tilt of your ground (horizon) depends on where on Earth you stand.
Try it
Press "Pause" to stop the animation, then set "① Latitude" to 35° and "② Time" to 0.0 h. Record the Polaris altitude (the yellow line "Altitude 35°") and the positions of the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia and Ursa Minor.
Advance "② Time" to 3.0 h and then 6.0 h. Check which way and by how many degrees the constellations turned around Polaris (readout such as "3.0 h → turned 45°").
Press the "Lat 0°", "45°" and "90°" buttons in turn. Compare the altitude of Polaris and the direction the stars move relative to the horizon (vertical, slanted, horizontal). Press "Play" to watch them move.
Return to latitude 35° and press "Switch view" (or drag the "③ View" slider to the right end) to get the "Circle view". Check the shape of the star paths, together with the top-view inset.
Check
What was the altitude of Polaris at latitudes 35°, 0°, 45° and 90°?→ 35°、0°(北の地平線上)、45°、90°(天頂)で、いつも緯度と同じだった。35°, 0° (on the northern horizon), 45° and 90° (at the zenith): it was always equal to the latitude.
When time was advanced by 3 hours, which way and by how much did the stars turn around Polaris?→ 反時計回りに 45° 回った(6時間で 90°)。 They turned 45° counterclockwise (90° in 6 hours): 15° per hour, or 360° (one full turn) in 24 hours. Polaris hardly moved.
How did the stars' motion differ between latitude 0° and 90°?→ 0° では北極星が地平線上にあり、星は地平線から垂直に昇り垂直に沈んだ(沈まない星はない)。 At 0°, Polaris was on the horizon and the stars rose and set vertically (no star stays up all the time). At 90°, Polaris was at the zenith and the stars moved in circles parallel to the horizon, never rising or setting.
In the Circle view and the top view, what shape were the star paths? How were stars below the horizon shown?→ どの星の軌跡も北極星を中心とする同心円になった。 Every star's path was a circle centered on Polaris (concentric circles). Stars below the horizon were hidden by the ground and shown faintly in the top view. Stars inside the green dotted circle in the top view (within an angle equal to the latitude from Polaris) never set.
Think further
Why does the altitude of Polaris equal the latitude of the place?→ 北極星はほぼ地軸の延長上(天の北極)にあり、非常に遠いので、地球上のどこから見ても地軸と平行な方向に見える。 Polaris lies almost on the extension of Earth's axis (the north celestial pole) and is so far away that from anywhere on Earth it is seen in a direction parallel to the axis. It is overhead at the North Pole (90°) and on the horizon at the equator (0°); at latitude φ the horizon plane is tilted by φ compared with the equator, so Polaris's altitude is φ.
Why do the stars appear to turn counterclockwise around Polaris?→ 地球が地軸を中心に西から東へ(北極の上から見て反時計回りに)1日1回自転しているため。 Because Earth rotates once a day around its axis from west to east (counterclockwise seen from above the North Pole). From the ground the stars seem to move the opposite way, and facing north they appear to turn counterclockwise around Polaris at about 15° per hour.
Common misconceptions
The idea that Polaris is always straight overhead. Its altitude equals the latitude, so from Japan (about 35°) it appears partway up the northern sky.
The idea that the stars themselves travel around Polaris. Their daily motion is an apparent motion caused by Earth's rotation.

Polaris is drawn exactly at the north celestial pole (in reality it is about 0.7° away). The stars turn 360° in 24 hours, ignoring the difference from the sidereal day (about 23 h 56 min). The "Real view" is a wide-angle map centered on the northern horizon, so paths far from Polaris look distorted; use the "Circle view" to check that the paths are circles. Time runs automatically on load, so press "Pause" before reading values.
