The Sun's Path Through the Seasons
Students understand that in Japan (35°N) the Sun's daily path changes with the seasons: at the summer solstice the noon altitude is high (about 78°), sunrise and sunset are toward the north and days are long; at the winter solstice the noon altitude is low (about 32°), sunrise and sunset are toward the south and days are short — and they relate this to the tilt of Earth's axis.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Is the Sun higher at noon (when it crosses due south) in summer or in winter? And do you think the Sun always rises due east all year round?💡 夏の昼と冬の昼で、校舎や木の影の長さはどう違ったか思い出してみましょう。Think about how long the shadows of buildings and trees are at noon in summer compared with winter.
How do you think the Sun's path changes to make summer days longer?💡 太陽は一定の速さで空を動きます。 The Sun moves across the sky at a steady rate. Focus on how much of its path is above the horizon.
Try it
Press "Pause" to stop the animation, then set "Season (month)" to Jun (summer solstice) and "Time" to 12:00. Record the "Noon altitude", "Day length", "Sunrise" and "Sunset" readouts.
Change "Season (month)" to Mar (spring equinox), Sep (autumn equinox) and Dec (winter solstice), record the same values, and put them in a table.
For both Jun and Dec, move the "Time" slider from 0:00 to 24:00. Check that the Sun moves east → south → west and that its path continues below the horizon (faint dashed line).
Set "Time" to 9:00 and compare the "Sun altitude" in Jun and Dec. Press "Play" to watch a whole day.
Check
What was the noon altitude at the summer solstice, the equinoxes and the winter solstice?→ 夏至 78.4°、春分・秋分 55.0°、冬至 31.6°。 Summer solstice 78.4°, equinoxes 55.0°, winter solstice 31.6°. Relative to 55° at the equinoxes, it changes by ±23.4° at the solstices.
How did the times and directions of sunrise and sunset, and the day length, differ between seasons?→ 夏至は日の出 4:49(東から北へ 29.0°、北東寄り)、日の入り 19:11(北西寄り)で昼は 14時間21分。 Summer solstice: sunrise 4:49 (29.0° north of east), sunset 19:11 (north of west), day length 14 h 21 min. Equinoxes: 6:00 due east and 18:00 due west, 12 h 0 min. Winter solstice: 7:11 (south of east) and 16:49 (south of west), 9 h 39 min.
At the same time, 9:00, how did the Sun's altitude differ between Jun and Dec?→ 6月は 49.4°、12月は 17.7° で、夏は同じ時刻でも太陽がずっと高い。In Jun it was 49.4°, in Dec 17.7°: in summer the Sun is much higher even at the same time of day.
Where was the Sun at 0:00 on the summer solstice?→ 「太陽の高度 −31.6°(地平線の下)」で、北の地平線の下にある。 Sun altitude −31.6° (below horizon)": it is below the northern horizon. The Sun keeps moving along its path below the horizon too.
Think further
Why do the noon altitude and the day length change with the seasons?→ 地球が地軸を公転面に垂直な方向から約23.4°傾けたまま太陽のまわりを公転しているため。 Because Earth orbits the Sun with its axis tilted about 23.4° from the perpendicular to its orbital plane. At the summer solstice the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, so the Sun's path shifts north and higher and more of it is above the horizon; the opposite happens at the winter solstice. The noon altitude is 90° − latitude ± 23.4°, giving 78.4° and 31.6° at 35°N.
Summer is hotter than winter because of both the higher noon altitude and the longer days. With a higher Sun, light strikes the ground closer to perpendicular, so each area receives more light. Longer days mean the ground receives sunlight for more hours. Both increase the energy the ground receives.
Common misconceptions
The idea that the Sun always rises due east and sets due west. That happens only around the equinoxes; in summer it rises and sets toward the north, in winter toward the south.
The idea that summer is hot because Earth is closer to the Sun. The seasons are caused by the axial tilt, which changes the Sun's noon altitude and the day length.

The observer is fixed at 35°N, looking south. The Sun's declination is approximated by a sine curve over the months (0° in Mar and Sep, +23.4° in Jun, −23.4° in Dec). Time is local solar time (noon = 12:00), ignoring the equation of time and atmospheric refraction, so sunrise times differ by several to a dozen or so minutes from a real almanac. Time runs automatically on load, so press "Pause" before reading values.
