Car Stopping Distance Simulator
Students understand that a car’s stopping distance is the sum of the reaction distance (v₀·t_r) and the braking distance (v₀²/2a), which can be found as areas under the v-t graph, and that the braking distance is proportional to the square of the speed, so doubling the speed makes it about 4 times longer.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a car’s speed is doubled from 60 km/h to 120 km/h, how many times longer will the distance from when the brakes start working until it stops (the braking distance) become?💡 速さが2倍になると、止まるまでにかかる時間と、その間の平均の速さがそれぞれどうなるかを考えよう。Think about what happens to both the time needed to stop and the average speed during that time when the speed doubles.
During the time between the driver noticing danger and pressing the brake (the reaction time), what is happening to the car’s speed?💡 まだブレーキが効いていないことに注目しよう。Notice that the brakes are not working yet.
Try it
With the starting settings (Initial speed v₀ = 60 km/h, Deceleration a = 7.0 m/s², Reaction time t_r = 0.75 s), press "Start". Watch the car on the road and the v-t graph line and colored areas move together. Record the reaction distance, braking distance and stopping distance shown on the right.
Set "Initial speed v₀" to 30 km/h and record the braking distance, then try 60 km/h and 120 km/h and compare. Also check the "Compare: if the initial speed is doubled…" line.
Keep the initial speed at 120 km/h and see whether the car can stop before the child (at 70 m). If it crashes, check the speed at impact that is displayed.
Set the initial speed back to 60 km/h. Compare how the stopping distance and the shape of the v-t graph change when "Deceleration a" is set to 4.0 m/s² (a guide value for a wet road) and when "Reaction time" is set to 1.50 s or 0 s.
Check
With the starting settings (60 km/h, 7.0 m/s², 0.75 s), what are the reaction distance, braking distance and stopping distance?→ 60 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 16.67 m/s 60 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 16.67 m/s, so the reaction distance is 16.67 × 0.75 = 12.50 m, the braking distance is 16.67² ÷ (2 × 7.0) = 19.84 m, and the stopping distance is 32.34 m. The blue rectangle and orange triangle on the v-t graph have areas of 12.5 m and 19.8 m.
What shape does the v-t graph have during the reaction time and during braking?→ 反応時間中は速さが変わらないので水平な線(0〜0.75 s)、ブレーキ中は傾き −a = −7.0 の直線で下がり、約3.13 sで0になる。During the reaction time the speed does not change, so the line is flat (0 to 0.75 s). During braking it falls in a straight line with slope −a = −7.0 and reaches 0 at about 3.13 s.
When the initial speed is doubled from 30 km/h to 60 km/h to 120 km/h, how does the braking distance change?→ 4.96 m → 19.84 m → 79.37 m It goes 4.96 m → 19.84 m → 79.37 m, becoming 4 times longer each time the speed doubles. The reaction distance only doubles: 6.25 m → 12.50 m → 25.00 m.
At 120 km/h, can the car stop before the child at 70 m?→ 止まれない。 No. The stopping distance is 104.37 m, which is 34.37 m too long, and the speed at impact is about 21.9 m/s (about 79 km/h).
Think further
Using the triangle on the v-t graph, explain why the braking distance is proportional to the square of the speed.→ 制動距離は高さv₀・底辺(止まるまでの時間)v₀/aの三角形の面積 ½×v₀×v₀/a = v₀²/(2a) である。 The braking distance is the area of a triangle with height v₀ and base v₀/a (the time to stop): ½ × v₀ × v₀/a = v₀²/(2a). Doubling the speed doubles both the height and the base, so the area becomes 2 × 2 = 4 times larger.
Why is it important to drive more slowly on rainy days? Explain using numbers from the simulation.→ 濡れた路面では減速度が小さく(約4 m/s²)、60 km/hでも制動距離が19.84 mから34.72 mに伸びる。 On a wet road the deceleration is smaller (about 4 m/s²), so even at 60 km/h the braking distance grows from 19.84 m to 34.72 m. Because the braking distance is proportional to the square of the speed, slowing down a little shortens it a lot.
Common misconceptions
The idea that doubling the speed doubles the stopping distance. The reaction distance doubles, but the braking distance becomes 4 times longer.
The idea that a car starts slowing down the instant the driver notices danger. During the reaction time it keeps moving at the same speed and covers the reaction distance.

The model assumes the car moves at exactly constant speed during the reaction time and then slows down at a constant deceleration a (in reality there is a delay before the brakes fully act, and road and tire conditions matter). The child is fixed at 70 m. The "Speed×1" button switches playback speed to ×2 and ×0.5.
