The Sky Seen by an Observer: The Sun's Path and Noon Altitude Through the Seasons

The Sky Seen by an Observer: The Sun's Path and Noon Altitude Through the Seasons 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that because Earth orbits the Sun with its axis tilted, the Sun’s daily path shifts parallel to itself around the north celestial pole through the seasons, changing the noon altitude (90° − latitude + the Sun’s declination) and the length of the day.

Predict (before you touch anything)

At latitude 35°N, which has the higher noon altitude and the longer day: the summer solstice or the winter solstice?💡 夏と冬で、正午ごろの自分の影の長さがどう違うかを思い出そう。Remember how long your shadow is around midday in summer compared with winter.
As the observer moves to a higher latitude (farther north), how does the altitude of Polaris change?💡 北極点に立つと、北極星はどの方向に見えるかを考えよう。Think about where Polaris would appear if you stood at the North Pole.

Try it

Check that "1. Latitude (N)" is 35.0° and the date is the "Summer solstice". Press "Play 1 day" and watch the Sun move from sunrise through noon to sunset. Record the noon altitude and the day length shown on the right.
Press the "Spring equinox", "Autumn equinox" and "Winter solstice" buttons in turn, and compare the position of the Sun’s path (orange arc), the noon altitude and the day length. Also move the "2. Date" slider and watch the path shift parallel to itself.
Set the date to "Summer solstice" and move the "1. Latitude (N)" slider from 0° to 66.5°. Watch how the height of the north celestial pole (Polaris), the latitude angle and the noon altitude change.
Keep the latitude at 66.5° and switch between "Summer solstice" and "Winter solstice". Check the share of the path above the horizon and whether the "Midnight sun" message appears. You can drag the picture to turn the view.

Check

At 35°N, about what is the noon altitude on the summer solstice, the spring equinox and the winter solstice? Does it match the formula "90° − latitude + declination"?→ 夏至は約78.4°(90−35+23.4)、春分は55.0°(90−35+0)、冬至は約31.6°(90−35−23.4)で、表示された式と一致する。About 78.4° on the summer solstice (90 − 35 + 23.4), 55.0° on the spring equinox (90 − 35 + 0) and about 31.6° on the winter solstice (90 − 35 − 23.4), matching the displayed formula.
At 35°N, about how long is the day on the summer solstice, the spring equinox and the winter solstice?→ 夏至は約14時間24分(弧の60%が地平線より上)、春分は約12時間(50%)、冬至は約9時間42分(40%)で、夏ほど地平線より上の弧が長い。About 14 h 24 min on the summer solstice (60% of the path above the horizon), about 12 h on the spring equinox (50%) and about 9 h 42 min on the winter solstice (40%). The arc above the horizon is longer in summer.
When you change the latitude, what happens to the altitude of Polaris?→ 北極星の高さは常に緯度と等しい(例:北緯35°で35°、北緯66.5°で66.5°)。 The altitude of Polaris is always equal to the latitude (for example 35° at 35°N and 66.5° at 66.5°N). The Sun’s path is always tilted as part of a circle centered on this north celestial pole.
At 66.5°N, how does the Sun’s motion differ between the summer solstice and the winter solstice?→ 夏至は昼の長さが約24時間で、真夜中でも太陽が沈まない「白夜」になる(南中高度約46.9°)。 On the summer solstice the day lasts about 24 hours and the Sun does not set even at midnight ("Midnight sun"; noon altitude about 46.9°). On the winter solstice the noon altitude is only about 0.1° and the day lasts only about one and a half hours.

Think further

Explain why it is hotter in summer using both the noon altitude and the length of the day.→ 夏は南中高度が高いので、同じ面積の地面が受ける光のエネルギーが大きくなる。 In summer the noon altitude is high, so each area of ground receives more light energy. The day is also longer, so the total energy received in a day is larger. These two reasons make summer warmer.
At the equator (0°N) the formula gives a summer-solstice noon altitude of 113.4°, which is more than 90°. What does this actually mean?→ 太陽が天頂を越えて北側に傾いた位置で南中するということで、北の空の高度は180°−113.4°=66.6°になる。 It means the Sun crosses the meridian past the zenith, on the north side, at an altitude of 180° − 113.4° = 66.6° above the northern horizon. On this day the Sun is directly overhead north of the equator (at 23.4°N).

The Sun’s declination uses the approximation 23.4° × sin(360° × (day − 80) / 365), and the clock is solar time with noon at 12:00 (no atmospheric refraction or equation of time). Sunrise and sunset use the top edge of the Sun, so even at the equinox the day is slightly longer (about 12 h 03 min), and the midnight sun appears at 66.5°N on the summer solstice. Junior high students may not know the word "declination", so you can simply call it +23.4° at the summer solstice and −23.4° at the winter solstice.
