Total or Annular? — How the Moon’s Distance Shapes a Solar Eclipse
Students understand that whether a solar eclipse is total or annular depends on the Moon’s distance: it decides whether the Moon’s angular diameter is larger or smaller than the Sun’s, that is, whether the tip of the umbra cone reaches Earth.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a solar eclipse happens when the Moon is far from Earth (at apogee), what will the eclipse look like from Earth?💡 遠くにあるものほど小さく見えることと、太陽と月がほぼ同じ大きさに見えることを思い出そう。Remember that things look smaller when they are farther away, and that the Sun and Moon look about the same size in the sky.
Does the Moon’s dark shadow (umbra) get wider or narrower as it goes from the Moon toward Earth?💡 光源の太陽は月よりずっと大きい。 The Sun, the light source, is much larger than the Moon. Think about light lines from the top and bottom edges of the Sun that just touch the edges of the Moon.
Try it
At first the Moon moves back and forth by itself. Press "Pause" to stop it, then move the "Moon’s distance from Earth’s center" slider to the left end (356,000 km, perigee). Record the status label, the angular diameters of the Sun and Moon, and the "Tip of the umbra cone" position.
Slowly move the "Moon’s distance from Earth’s center" slider to the right and find the distance where the status changes from "Total eclipse" to "Annular eclipse". Compare it with the "▲Switch 373.4k" mark under the slider and with the point where the "Comparison" line changes.
Set the "Moon’s distance from Earth’s center" slider to the right end (406,000 km, apogee). In the cross-section, check that the red "Tip" is in front of Earth and that the orange antumbra spreads out beyond it. Also look at the "Sky view" window to see how the Sun and Moon look.
Keep the distance and move the "Observer offset (up/down from Earth’s center)" slider. Watch how the status label and the "Sky view" change as the observer moves from the antumbra to the penumbra and then out of the shadow (for example +1,500 km and +4,000 km).
Press "Center the observer", then press "Play". Watch how the tip position and the status label change smoothly as the Moon moves between perigee and apogee.
Check
At perigee (356,000 km) and apogee (406,000 km), about how many arcminutes (′) is the Moon’s angular diameter? How does it compare with the Sun’s?→ 近地点で約33.5′、遠地点で約29.4′。 About 33.5′ at perigee and about 29.4′ at apogee. The Sun is about 32.0′, so at perigee the Moon looks larger than the Sun and at apogee it looks smaller.
At about what Moon distance does the eclipse switch between total and annular? What does the "Comparison" line show there?→ 約37.3万km(373,355 km)。 About 373,000 km (373,355 km). At 372,000 km it shows "Moon > Sun" and a total eclipse; at 374,000 km it shows "Moon < Sun" and an annular eclipse. The switch happens exactly where the angular sizes swap.
At apogee (406,000 km), where is the tip of the umbra cone? Which shadow is an observer at Earth’s center in?→ 頂点は地表より約2.6万km手前にあり、本影は地球に届かない。 The tip is about 26,000 km short of Earth’s surface, so the umbra does not reach Earth. The observer is in the antumbra that opens out beyond the tip, and the "Sky view" shows the Sun as a ring around the Moon (annular eclipse).
Still at apogee, what does the status label show when the observer offset is +1,500 km and +4,000 km?→ +1,500 kmでは半影の中で「部分日食」、+4,000 kmでは半影(基準面での半径約3,636 km)の外なので「日食なし」になる。At +1,500 km the observer is in the penumbra and sees a "Partial eclipse"; at +4,000 km the observer is outside the penumbra (radius about 3,636 km on the reference plane), so there is "No eclipse".
Think further
Why does changing only the Moon’s distance give two kinds of eclipse, total and annular? Explain using the shape of the umbra cone.→ 太陽は月より大きいので、太陽と月の縁に接する外側の2直線は月の後ろで交わり、本影は先細りの円錐になる。 Because the Sun is larger than the Moon, the two outer lines touching the edges of the Sun and Moon meet behind the Moon, so the umbra is a narrowing cone. Its length stays almost the same, so when the Moon is close the tip reaches past Earth and the umbra falls on the surface (total eclipse). When the Moon is far the tip ends before Earth, and places in the antumbra beyond it see the Moon smaller than the Sun (annular eclipse).
If the Moon’s diameter were larger than it is, how would the switch distance between total and annular change? Use the on-screen formula "Switch distance = Moon radius × Sun–Earth distance ÷ Sun radius".→ 切替距離は月の半径に比例するので遠くなる。 The switch distance is proportional to the Moon’s radius, so it would be farther away. The Moon would then look larger than the Sun even near apogee more often, so annular eclipses would be rarer and total eclipses more common.
Common misconceptions
The idea that the Moon’s shadow reaches Earth as a straight band as wide as the Moon. In fact, because the Sun is larger than the Moon, the umbra is a narrowing cone, and what matters is whether its tip reaches Earth.
The idea that an annular eclipse is just "the Moon is too far to cover the Sun" and has nothing to do with the shadow. An annular eclipse is seen from places inside the antumbra, beyond the tip of the umbra.

The cross-section is not to scale; only the numbers use real sizes. The eclipse type is judged on a "reference plane" through Earth’s center, so at the surface point directly under the Moon a total eclipse actually lasts to a slightly larger distance. The Sun’s distance is fixed at 149.6 million km (angular diameter about 32.0′), so the small change in the Sun’s apparent size during Earth’s orbit is not modeled.
