Phases and Apparent Size of Venus
Predict (before you touch anything)
Through a telescope, Venus sometimes looks large and sometimes small. When it looks large, do you think it appears round like a full Moon, or thin and crescent-shaped?💡 金星が地球に近づくのはどんな位置関係のときか、そのとき太陽の光が当たっている面は地球の方を向いているかを考えよう。Think about where Venus is when it comes closest to Earth, and whether its sunlit side faces Earth at that time.
Do you think Venus can ever be seen high in the southern sky at midnight?💡 地球から見て、金星と太陽の方向はどのくらいまで離れることができるか、宇宙から見た図で考えてみよう。Using a view from space, think about how far apart the directions to Venus and to the Sun can be, as seen from Earth.

(画面をタップすると再生/停止できる)Watch one full run (0–584 days) on auto-play and use "Venus ...° (1 orbit = 225 days)" and "Earth ...° (1 orbit = 365 days)" at the top right of the "View from space" to check which planet orbits faster. (Tap the picture to play or pause.)
Set the "Days passed" slider to 0 (inferior conjunction), 72 (greatest elongation, west), 293 (superior conjunction) and 515 (greatest elongation, east). Record the shape and size of Venus in the "Telescope view from Earth" and the "lit fraction f", "Distance", "Diameter" and "Elongation" values.
Move "Days passed" to values such as 20, 40, 150, 440, 550 and 570 days, and check whether the lit side of Venus always faces the "To the Sun" arrow, comparing with the Sun–Venus–Earth positions in the view from space.
Set "Telescope magnification" to 100× and compare the size of Venus near inferior conjunction (day 0) and at superior conjunction (day 293). Also check the "(...× superior conj.)" value shown below.
Check
How many days does each of Venus and Earth take to go once around the Sun? Venus takes about 225 days and Earth about 365 days, so Venus is faster. On day 72, for example, Venus has moved 115° and Earth 71°.
At inferior conjunction (day 0) and superior conjunction (day 293), what shape and size did Venus appear?→ 内合では地球に最も近く(距離0.28)、直径約59.6″で最も大きいが、輝面比 f=0.000でほとんど光る部分がない(その前後は細い三日月形)。 At inferior conjunction it is closest (distance 0.28) and largest (about 59.6″ across), but the lit fraction is f = 0.000, so almost nothing is lit (just before and after, it is a thin crescent). At superior conjunction it is farthest (distance 1.72) and smallest (about 9.7″), but f = 1.000, so it looks full and round. The size ratio is about 6.1×.
At greatest elongation, what was the elongation and what shape was Venus?→ 離角は約46.1°で、それ以上大きくならない。 The elongation is about 46.1° and never gets larger. Venus is exactly half lit (f ≈ 0.50). Day 72 is greatest western elongation: Venus is in the eastern sky before dawn (morning star) with its left side lit. Day 515 is greatest eastern elongation: Venus is in the western sky in the evening (evening star) with its right side lit.
Which way did the lit side of Venus always face?→ いつも「太陽の方向」の矢印の側を向いていた。 It always faced the "To the Sun" arrow. Venus shines by reflecting sunlight, so we see the part of its sunlit half that faces Earth.
Think further
Why is Venus more thinly lit the larger it looks? Explain using the positions in the view from space.→ 金星が地球に近づくのは、地球と太陽の間(内合)付近に来るときである。 Venus comes close to Earth when it is near the point between Earth and the Sun (inferior conjunction). Then its sunlit half faces the Sun, away from Earth, so we see only a sliver of the lit part: a thin crescent. Near the far side of the Sun (superior conjunction) Venus is far from Earth and looks small, but almost all of its lit face points toward Earth, so it looks round.
Why can Venus never be seen at midnight? Venus orbits inside Earth's orbit, so from Earth it is never more than about 46° from the Sun. An object seen at midnight must be roughly opposite the Sun (elongation near 180°), so Venus is seen only in the western sky in the evening or the eastern sky before dawn. The Moon orbits Earth, so it can be opposite the Sun (full Moon) and can be seen at midnight.
Common misconceptions
Venus's phases are caused by Earth's shadow falling on it, like the Moon's." Phases come from the angle from which we view the sunlit half; Earth's shadow plays no part (the Moon's phases have the same cause).
When Venus looks large, it looks round and full like a full Moon." It looks large near inferior conjunction, when it is close to Earth and a thin crescent; it looks round near superior conjunction, when it is far away and small.

The model treats the orbits of Venus (radius 0.72) and Earth as coplanar circles and starts at inferior conjunction on day 0. The real synodic period is about 584 days, but in this model it is about 587 days, so the end of the slider (day 584) falls just before the next inferior conjunction. The telescope image is drawn with north up and east to the left, as seen with the naked eye; some telescopes flip the image. In reality Venus cannot be observed very close to inferior conjunction because of the Sun's glare, and changes in Venus's brightness (magnitude) are not modeled. The formula f = (1 + cosα)/2 is beyond junior-high level; it is enough to have students read it as "the fraction that is lit".
