Predict (before you touch anything)
When rabbits increase, what do you think happens to the number of foxes? When foxes increase, what then happens to the rabbits and the grass? Sketch your prediction of how the numbers of rabbits and foxes change, with time on the x-axis.💡 キツネは何を食べて増えるのか、ウサギが減ったらキツネのえさはどうなるかを順番に考えよう。Think step by step: what do foxes need to eat to increase, and what happens to their food when rabbits decrease?
If foxes became extremely good at hunting, do you think that would be good for the foxes in every way?💡 キツネが食べすぎた後、えさになるウサギがどうなるかを想像してみよう。Imagine what happens to the rabbits, the foxes' food, after the foxes eat too many.
Try it
Press "Reset" and run at "16x" with the sliders at their starting values (① Plant regrowth rate 0.30/day, ② Fox hunting efficiency success 3.0%/day, ③ Decomposition rate 0.30/day). Watch the rabbit (orange) and fox (brown) lines in the graph and their ▲ peak marks.
After a few cycles, record the red dashed "lag ... days" on the graph and "Peak lag ... days / cycle ... days" in the panel. Also compare when the grass (green line) rises and falls with the rabbits.
Switch to "4x" and, while it is running, move "② Fox hunting efficiency" all the way right (success 8.0%/day). Watch how rabbits, foxes and grass change, in that order, and whether extinction badges appear.
Press "Reset", move "② Fox hunting efficiency" all the way left (success 0.5%/day) and run. Watch what happens to foxes, rabbits and grass.
Return "② Fox hunting efficiency" to 3.0%/day, and compare the "Effective growth rate" in the panel and the "grass ×..." value on the soil strip when "③ Decomposition rate" is 0.00/day and when it is 1.00/day.
Check
Which peak (▲) came first, the rabbits' or the foxes'? By how much was the other delayed?→ いつもウサギのピークが先で、キツネのピークはおよそ22日遅れて現れる。 The rabbit peak always comes first, and the fox peak follows about 22 days later. The cycle is about 85 days, so the lag is about 1/4 cycle. By the time foxes are most numerous, rabbits are already decreasing.
How did the amount of grass (plants) rise and fall in relation to the number of rabbits?→ ウサギが増えると草が食べられて減り、ウサギが減ると草が回復して増える。 When rabbits increase, the grass is eaten and decreases; when rabbits decrease, the grass recovers. The grass is lowest just after the rabbits are most numerous. Even when it grows, the grass never goes above its upper limit (1.0 on the graph); it levels off.
When hunting efficiency was raised to 8.0%/day, what happened, and in what order?→ まずウサギが急に減って0になり「ウサギ 絶滅」が出る。 First the rabbits drop sharply to zero and "Rabbits extinct" appears. Foxes rise for a while but then, after a delay, decline from lack of food until "Foxes extinct" appears. With nothing eating it, the grass grows to 100% (its upper limit).
How did grass growth differ between a decomposition rate of 0 and of 1.00?→ 0のときは「実効生育速度」が0.300/日のまま(草の生育 ×1.00)で、土壌有機物がたまるだけで草の成長を助けない。 At 0, the "Effective growth rate" stays at 0.300/day (grass ×1.00); soil organic matter just accumulates without helping the grass. At 1.00, soil organic matter is decomposed into nutrients and the effective growth rate rises to about 0.35–0.44/day.
Think further
Why does the fox peak come later than the rabbit peak?→ キツネはウサギを食べて増えるので、ウサギが多い間はキツネが増え続ける。 Foxes increase by eating rabbits, so they keep increasing while rabbits are plentiful. Even after rabbits start to decline, foxes keep increasing as long as there is still enough food, and they only begin to decrease once food runs short. So changes in fox numbers follow changes in rabbit numbers with a delay.
If people removed all the foxes and other carnivores from an area, what would likely happen to the grassland there?→ 捕食者がいなくなるとウサギなどの草食動物が大きく増え、草が食べつくされて少なくなる(捕食効率を0.5%/日にしてキツネが絶滅すると、ウサギが増えて草は約12%まで減った)。 Without predators, rabbits and other herbivores would increase greatly and eat much of the grass (with hunting efficiency at 0.5%/day the foxes died out, rabbits increased, and grass fell to about 12%). Removing one kind of organism upsets the balance of the other organisms linked to it in the food chain.
Common misconceptions
Predators and prey rise and fall at the same time." In fact the prey changes first and the predator follows with a delay.
The better a predator is at hunting, the more it thrives." If it eats up all its prey, the predator itself declines from lack of food and can even die out.

The model is a deterministic predator–prey calculation (Lotka–Volterra type with logistic grass growth and predator satiation added); it includes no chance events such as weather or disease, so the same settings always give the same waves. A species is treated as extinct below 0.5 individuals and does not recover. Grass is shown as a fraction of its upper limit K, and the graph shows rabbits relative to 100 and foxes relative to 20 (= 1.0), so do not compare the vertical-axis values directly as numbers of animals. Emphasize that the "balance" shown in textbook pyramids is not constant but is maintained through repeated rises and falls.
