Doppler Effect of a Moving Sound Source
Students understand that when a sound source moves, each wavefront stays centered where it was emitted, so the wavelength shrinks to (c − v)T ahead of the source and stretches to (c + v)T behind it, changing the observed frequency to f′ = f·c/(c ∓ v) (the Doppler effect).

Predict (before you touch anything)
When a source moves toward an observer, do you think the frequency the observer hears is higher than, lower than, or equal to the source's frequency f? What about when it moves away?💡 音源は波面を出しながら移動します。 The source keeps moving while it emits wavefronts. Where is the source when it emits the next wavefront, compared with the previous one?
What do you think happens to the pattern of wavefronts if the source moves faster than sound?💡 波面は音速 c で広がります。 Wavefronts spread at the speed of sound c. If the source travels faster, which gets ahead: the wavefronts or the source?
Try it
Set "Source speed v" to +0.00 c and press "Reset". Check that the wavefronts spread as evenly spaced circles centered on the source, and that the readout shows "Theory f′ = f = 2.00 Hz (source at rest)".
Set Source speed v to +0.50 c and press "Reset". While the source approaches the green observer, record the wavefront spacing ahead and behind and the "Measured f′" value (use "Pause" to freeze the view if needed).
Set Source speed v to −0.50 c (reverse direction) and press "Reset". Record "Theory f′" and "Measured f′" while the source moves away from the observer.
Set Source speed v to +1.50 c and press "Reset". Check whether there are wavefronts ahead of the source, and look at the red dashed "Mach cone" and the Mach angle θ. Try +2.00 c as well.
Check
With v = +0.50 c (c = 1.00, f = 2.0 Hz), what were the wavefront spacings ahead of and behind the source?→ 前方 (c−|v|)T = 0.250、後方 (c+|v|)T = 0.750 で、比は 0.333(1 : 3)。 Ahead: (c − |v|)T = 0.250; behind: (c + |v|)T = 0.750, a ratio of 0.333 (1 : 3). With the source at rest both are 0.500. The center of each wavefront stays where it was emitted.
What was the measured f′ at the observer when the source approached and when it moved away (|v| = 0.50 c)?→ 近づくときは 4.00 Hz(理論 f/(1−v/c) = 4.00 Hz)、遠ざかるときは 1.33 Hz(理論 f/(1+v/c) = 1.33 Hz)で、実測と理論が一致した。Approaching: 4.00 Hz (theory f/(1 − v/c) = 4.00 Hz). Moving away: 1.33 Hz (theory f/(1 + v/c) = 1.33 Hz). The measured values matched theory.
What did the wavefronts look like at v = +1.50 c? What was the Mach angle?→ 音源の前方には波面がなく(「前方に波面なし」)、波面が後方で重なって円すい形の包絡線(マッハコーン)ができた。 There were no wavefronts ahead of the source ("No wavefronts ahead"); the wavefronts overlapped behind it and formed a cone-shaped envelope (the Mach cone). The Mach angle was θ = 41.8° (sinθ = c/v = 0.667). At v = +2.00 c it becomes sharper, 30.0°.
Think further
Why does an ambulance siren sound higher as it approaches and suddenly lower after it passes? Explain with the formula for f′.→ 近づくときは前方の波長が (c−v)T に縮み、1秒間に届く波面の数が増えるので f′ = f·c/(c−v) > f。 While approaching, the wavelength ahead shrinks to (c − v)T, so more wavefronts arrive each second: f′ = f·c/(c − v) > f. After it passes, the observer is behind the source, the wavelength stretches to (c + v)T, and f′ = f·c/(c + v) < f. The switch from ahead to behind happens as it passes, so the pitch drops suddenly.
Why does the Mach angle get smaller as the source gets faster?→ 時間 t の間に音源は vt 進み、その間に出た最初の波面は半径 ct に広がる。 In time t the source travels vt, while a wavefront emitted at the start spreads to radius ct. The edge of the cone is tangent to that circle, so sinθ = ct/vt = c/v; the larger v is, the smaller θ is, and the narrower the cone.
Common misconceptions
The idea that a moving source changes the speed of sound. The speed of sound is set by the medium and stays c; what changes is the wavelength (wavefront spacing).
The idea that the wavefronts' centers move along with the source. Once emitted, each wavefront keeps spreading around the point where it was emitted.

The speed of sound is in normalized units (units/s), not the real 340 m/s. The source and observer lie on the same line, the observer is at rest, and there is no wind, so the formula for a moving observer is not covered. When v > c, wavefronts arrive in reverse order, so the theory is shown as |f′|. The scene restarts when the source leaves the screen, so to measure a receding source it is easiest to set v negative and press "Reset".
