Frequency, Pitch and Waveform
Students understand that pitch is set by the frequency of the sound source (higher frequency, higher pitch), that loudness is set by the amplitude, and that changing frequency or amplitude does not change the speed at which sound travels.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a string vibrates more times per second (higher frequency), what do you think happens to the pitch?💡 輪ゴムを強く張ってはじいたときや、短い弦をはじいたときの音と、弦の震え方を思い出してみましょう。Think about the sound of a rubber band stretched tight or a short string being plucked, and how fast it seems to shake.
Do you think high-pitched and low-pitched sounds travel through air at different speeds?💡 遠くで演奏している音楽を聞くとき、高い音と低い音が別々の時刻に届くかどうか考えてみましょう。When you hear music played far away, consider whether the high notes and the low notes reach you at different times.
Try it
In the starting state ("Frequency f" = 440 Hz, "Amplitude (loudness)" = 60 %), watch the "Sound source (string)" swinging on the left and the "Sound wave in air (moving right)" on the right. Note that the screen shows time slowed down 200×.
Set the "Frequency f" slider to 200 Hz and then to 800 Hz. Record how fast the string swings, the spacing between crests (λ), the "Low pitch / High pitch" label and the period T.
At both 200 Hz and 800 Hz, compare how fast the black "Speed marker (crest)" crosses the screen and the "v = … px/s" value at the bottom right.
Return f to 440 Hz, then set "Amplitude (loudness)" to 20 % and 100 %. Watch what happens to the string's swing, the wave height, the crest spacing and the period readout.
Press "Play sound", move the frequency and amplitude sliders, and listen to how the real pitch and loudness change (press "Stop sound" when done).
Check
When the frequency was raised from 200 Hz to 800 Hz, how did the string's motion and the waveform change?→ 弦は速く往復するようになり(周期 T が 5.00 ms から 1.25 ms に、画面上では 1.00 s から 0.25 s に)、波の山と山の間隔は 4 分の 1 に短くなった(例:λ が約 398 px から約 100 px)。 The string swung back and forth faster (the period T went from 5.00 ms to 1.25 ms, or from 1.00 s to 0.25 s on screen), and the crest spacing shrank to one quarter (e.g. λ from about 398 px to about 100 px). The label changed from "Low pitch" to "High pitch".
Did the speed at which the wave moves to the right change when you changed the frequency?→ 変わらなかった。 No. The "Speed marker (crest)" moved at the same speed and the v value at the bottom right stayed the same (e.g. about 398 px/s). As the frequency goes up, the crest spacing (wavelength) gets shorter instead.
When the amplitude was changed from 20 % to 100 %, what changed and what stayed the same?→ 弦の振れ幅と波の高さが大きくなり、音を鳴らすと大きな音になった。 The string's swing and the wave height got bigger, and the sound became louder. The frequency, the period T (2.27 ms at 440 Hz), the crest spacing and the travel speed did not change, and neither did the pitch.
What was the relationship between the frequency f and the period T?→ T = 1/f T = 1/f, so the higher the frequency, the shorter the time for one round trip. The display showed 10.00 ms at 100 Hz, 5.00 ms at 200 Hz and 1.00 ms at 1000 Hz.
Think further
Plucking a guitar string harder makes the sound louder but does not change its pitch. Use what you saw in the simulation to explain why.→ 強くはじくと振幅が大きくなるだけで、1 秒間の振動の回数(振動数)は変わらないから。 Plucking harder only increases the amplitude; the number of vibrations per second (frequency) stays the same. In the simulation, changing the amplitude changed only the swing and the wave height, while the frequency and period stayed the same and so did the pitch.
If the speed of sound stays the same, what happens to the wavelength when the frequency doubles?→ 半分になる。 It is halved. Speed = wavelength × frequency, so at the same speed, doubling the frequency makes the wavelength half. In the simulation, going from 200 Hz to 400 Hz halves the crest spacing.
Common misconceptions
Louder sounds are higher" or "higher sounds travel faster." Loudness depends on amplitude and pitch on frequency, and neither one changes how fast sound travels through air.
Sound travels as air moving up and down like the waveform picture." The waveform is a graph of the vibration; real sound travels as the air is compressed and stretched along the direction the sound moves.

Time on screen is slowed down 200×, and the px values for wavelength and speed depend on screen width (the real speed of sound in air is about 340 m/s). The wave on the right is a transverse-style graph of the sound; it helps to add that real sound is a longitudinal (compression) wave. The "Low / Medium / High pitch" cut-offs (350 Hz and 650 Hz) are display guides, not physical boundaries.
